Ireland could be hit by rare 'blood rain' as hail and flooding to batter Dublin

Ireland could be hit by a rare "blood rain" event as a dust cloud from the Sahara mixed with thunderstorms is spreading up north.

This rare phenomenon occurs when high concentrations of red coloured dust get mixed in with rain, giving it a red appearance as it falls, according to the UK Met Office.

A warning for blood rain is in place for parts of England over the coming days.

Met Eireann has issued a nasty forecast for the weekend warning of hail and flooding.

Today will start off dry but heavy rain is expected later this morning or early afternoon.

The rain will clear in the afternoon to sunny spells however heavy and blustery showers will also follow.

Thundery downpours could hit later this afternoon with hail and a risk of spot flooding.

However, some areas will see a bright end to the day as showers will ease in the evening. Daytime temperatures will range from 15 to 17 degrees.

Tonight will be mostly dry and clear at first but will turn cloudier overnight with the lowest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees.

Tomorrow will be cloudy but mostly dry. However, there is the chance of an odd shower mostly during the evening.

It will brighten up at times with the odd spell of sunshine with the highest temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees.

While there is no further forecast for Dublin, here is what the national outlook says:

Saturday night

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A cloudy to overcast night with showers persisting in Atlantic coastal counties. Long dry spells in the east with just the odd shower overnight.

"Mild and humid with temperatures not falling below 11 or 12 degrees. Moderate to fresh southwest winds will be strong for a time on northwestern coasts. Misty in places with some local fog.

Sunday

"A rather cloudy morning with showers extending countrywide. Brightening up in the afternoon with some sunshine in between showers. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with moderate southwest breezes.

Sunday night

"Showers will continue to feed in overnight from the Atlantic in a light to moderate westerly breeze. Some clear spells, with the driest weather towards the southeast. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees."
