Giving its prediction for today, Met Eireann said winds are due to strengthen later on, while tonight will feel cold.
It said: “Today will be largely dry with spells of sunshine and just isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 13C to 15C in light to moderate southwest winds, strengthening during the evening, with a chance of wave overtopping along west and northwest coasts.
“Breezy overnight with cloud building from the west with rain following over Connacht, west Munster and west Ulster. Staying largely dry further east. Southerly winds will increase fresh and gusty, strong at times on coasts. Lowest temperatures of 6C to 11C.”
Looking ahead to tomorrow, it's set to be another wet day with chilly temperatures and thunderous rain forecast for overnight.
The national forecaster said: “Wet and breezy at first with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds and rain extending eastwards to all areas, turning heavy at times. Mostly dry and sunny conditions will follow in from the northwest in the afternoon as the rain slowly clears southeastwards with winds veering northwesterly and easing. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C.
“The last of the rain will clear the southeast early in the night, becoming predominately dry and clear. Chilly with lowest temperatures of 5C to 9C in mostly light to moderate westerly winds, fresher at times in the north and northwest with a few showers there, possibly turning heavy or thundery near coasts.”
For next week, the meteorological service has forecast: “Changeable with rain and showers at times. Good dry periods too, especially on Monday and Wednesday. Becoming more unsettled towards the end of the working week.”
Giving its day-by-day forecast, it continued: “A largely dry day on Monday with some sunny spells and just isolated showers in the north. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C in light to moderate westerly breezes.
“Becoming mostly overcast through the night with outbreaks of light rain and drizzle developing. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 9C, coolest over the eastern half of the country, in mostly light southwest breezes.
“A mostly cloudy day on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, heaviest and most persistent in the west and north through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 11C to 14C, in moderate south to southwest winds, freshening along Atlantic coasts during the evening.
“Mostly cloudy overnight with further outbreaks of rain, with some heavy falls possible at times. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 11C in moderate southwest winds, fresher near coasts.
“A mostly damp and cloudy morning on Wednesday with outbreaks of rain, clearing eastwards through the morning and followed by sunshine and showers. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C in light to moderate northwest.
“A good deal of uncertainty in the details for the rest of the week but current indications suggest that it will be quite unsettled with spells of wet and breezy, possibly windy weather.”
Looking ahead to the following week of October 17 - 23, it said temperatures are forecast to be "slightly below average, with the potential for some frost".
