Ireland boss addresses ‘genocide’ remarks after being accused of ‘ignorance’ by Israel

  • Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has acknowledged that stating his team would be "playing against genocide" in upcoming Uefa Nations League matches against Israel was "maybe not clever", admitting the comments distracted from team focus.
  • Hallgrimsson expressed gratitude for the support he received after the Israel Football Association launched a furious attack against him, accusing the Irish manager of embodying "ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity".
  • Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin defended Hallgrimsson, describing the response from the Israel FA as "unacceptable" and stating that the manager reflected international concern over the destruction in Gaza.
  • Both Uefa Nations League fixtures will take place at neutral venues in Hungary and Serbia after security concerns led the Football Association of Ireland to request moving their home match away from Dublin.
  • Despite calls from campaigners to boycott the fixtures, the FAI voted to play the games to avoid severe Uefa penalties that could jeopardise Ireland's qualification prospects for future tournaments including Euro 2028.
