Iranian protesters decry 'morality police'

Women wearing headscarves walk in the streets near Tajrish Square in Tehran on July 12. Iranian law requires all women to wear a hijab that covers the head and neck while concealing the hair. But many push the boundaries by allowing their head coverings to slide back and reveal more hair. (Reuters Photo)

Protests broke out in western Iran on Saturday at the funeral of a young woman who died after being detained by morality police enforcing strict hijab rules, as security forces used tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

Videos posted on social media showed protesters shouting anti-government slogans after gathering in Saqez, the hometown of Mahsa Amini, from nearby cities in Kurdistan province as they mourned the 22-year-old who died in a hospital in Tehran on Friday.
