Iran introduced a higher price for its heaviest gasoline users after Tehran said it will unveil new sanctions for ships trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following a weekend of renewed exchanges with the US.
Under the new system, people buying more than their quota of 110 liters of gasoline a month now must pay 100,000 rials (about 7 cents) per liter, or twice as much as they have been paying since December.
Gas price hikes can be sensitive, as seen in 2019 when an increase led to nationwide protests and a deadly crackdown.
The price hike comes as shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz slowed at the start of this week after Iran threatened to retaliate for any new US attacks.
The number of commodity vessels sailing through the strait totalled seven on Monday, compared with eight on the previous day, Kpler data showed on Tuesday.
Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, said any ship seen entering the new restricted zone would be added to a sanctions list, reiterating that the waterway would only fully open again once the Americans “stop the sabotage, threats and attacks on Iran”.

A UAE senior official has said that "no single state" should control the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran said it plans to announce a new "exclusion zone" near the waterway aimed at vessels intending to transit.
"Our energy exports will not be held hostage, nor will our trade and economic activity," Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, said at a forum of world leaders in Abu Dhabi.
Gargash said Iran should face consequences for threatening oil tankers and commercial vessels in the strait with mines, drones or missiles.
"Using an international waterway as an instrument of coercion is unacceptable," he added. The UAE, a close US ally, has repeatedly come under Iranian missile and drone fire throughout the war.

Israel carried out airstrikes on the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Rumman, killing at least 12 people, including a paramedic, four women and two children, the health ministry said.
The strikes came during a new round of escalation between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah. Israel's military said it struck several Hezbollah militants it accused of transferring weapons to Kfar Rumman.
The military also said it was reviewing the claim that "several uninvolved civilians were harmed" in overnight strikes across southern Lebanon, which it said were in response to Hezbollah militants launching explosive drones against soldiers in the area of the Ali Taher ridge.

"In recent days, Washington has received a clear warning from Iran’s new missiles. Economic warfare will be met by a maritime exclusion zone across the Persian Gulf to the blockade perimeter. The operational posture toward US warships and bases has been fundamentally recalibrated," Rezaei said.
Rezaei was likely referring to the Qassem Basir ballistic missile that Iranian media reported was fired at US warships near the Strait of Hormuz. The US military said its warships evaded any missile attacks.

State news agency IRNA reported late on Saturday that the vehicle suffered a brake fault and struck several cars before catching fire near a traffic police station outside Sanandaj, a Kurdish city roughly 400 kilometres (248 miles) west of Tehran.

Iran's government to raise fuel price for heavy users

Iran will raise the price of gasoline for users surpassing 110 litres per month starting on Tuesday, a government spokesperson said, as it steps up efforts to tackle problems created by the war and crippling US economic sanctions.
Motorists can still buy up to 60 litres at 15,000 rials (about one pence) per litre and an additional 50 litres at 30,000 rials per litre.
But the price for amounts above that will be raised to 100,000 Iranian rials (about 5 pence) per litre, Fatemeh Mohajerani said in comments carried by state media.
The increase in Iran's gasoline price, which is one of the lowest in the world, was discussed by the government and postponed amid concerns it could trigger new protests.
Iran experienced widespread protests in 2019 over the same issue.
The higher fuel price will only affect consumers who require more than 110 litres per month and is due to "current conditions", Mohajerani said.

Rescue crews have been digging out the bodies from the Zeitoun neighborhood.

"We are witnessing a painful, heartbreaking scene," said Mustafa Quzghat, a relative.
The bodies were wrapped in white shrouds and draped with Palestinian flags. Some shrouds bore images of the deceased, according to Associated Press footage. They were laid out in rows on the ground.
Over 73,650 Palestinians have been killed since the war in Gaza began, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
The ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, maintains detailed records viewed as generally reliable by UN agencies and international organisations. It doesn't give a breakdown of civilians and militants.

Israeli strikes killed at least seven people in southern Lebanon and leveled an empty hospital, Lebanon's health ministry said.
Strikes on the village of Arabsalim killed two, the ministry said.
Two others were killed in Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa, near a strategic hill that Israel said its forces gained control over on Thursday.
And three people were killed in the village of Nabatiyeh al-Tahta after an Israeli drone struck a parking lot.
At least 20 others were wounded in strikes, the ministry said, among them three children and five women.
Israel's military said its latest strikes came in response to a drone attack launched earlier on Sunday by Hezbollah on troops in southern Lebanon.
It said Hezbollah had used the empty hospital as a command centre.
Since a ceasefire went into effect between Israel and Hezbollah more than two months ago, low-level skirmishes and Israeli strikes continue in the south.

At least 11 people have been killed and seven injured after a fuel tanker exploded in western Iran, state media said.
State news agency IRNA reported late on Saturday that the vehicle suffered a brake fault and struck several cars before catching fire near a traffic police station outside Sanandaj, a Kurdish city roughly 400 kilometres (248 miles) west of Tehran.
The injured were taken to hospital.

Six months after U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran, the war appears to be at a stalemate. A preliminary ceasefire accord reached in June has unravelled and little progress has been made in diplomatic efforts to get the peace process back on track.
After a pause in military action for much of July, tit-for-tat strikes have resumed with US Central Command saying it hit three Iranian tankers on Saturday in response to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launching ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy ships.
Following the attacks, Iran's Parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said on Sunday that the US should understand that the rules of the game in the war against Iran have changed "before it is too late".

OPEC+ (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and other oil-producing countries) is set to keep its oil output policy unchanged for October at a meeting on Sunday, two people familiar with the discussions told Reuters, as the producer group needs to agree new quotas before deciding its next output steps.
The meeting comes as the Iran war continues to disrupt oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, limiting OPEC+'s influence over prices and market share. Unlike in the past, the group's supply decisions have had a limited impact on the market.
In August, OPEC+ agreed its production boost for September, completing a phased rollback of a 1.65 million-barrel-per-day supply cut first agreed in 2023. Despite the agreed production increases, the group made up of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, including Russia, still produces far below its targets because of the war.
OPEC+ still has another layer of production cuts in place, covering most members of the 21-country group until the end of 2026. Before the group decides how to unwind the cuts and return production to the market, it needs to review members' oil production capacity to set 2027 output baselines, which form the basis for quotas.
This debate will likely happen later in 2026 and hence OPEC+ is likely to pause its output increases for the fourth quarter, sources earlier told Reuters.

The U.S. military says it struck three Iranian oil tankers Saturday, including one off the coast of Kharg Island, near Iran's key oil export hub.
The strikes were carried out after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy warships, Central Command said.
“Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours," said Admiral Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command.
In a statement Saturday, the military said an aircraft carrier and a destroyer evaded “multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks”, and no U.S. personnel were hurt. It said two Iranian oil carriers were “permanently disabled” and the third, unladen one, was destroyed.
The U.S. statement said the tankers were part of a shadow network helping to fund Iran’s IRGC.

The Israeli military had issued an evacuation warning to areas near a building in Arab Salim town in South Lebanon, saying it will strike it as it is used by Hezbollah.
There was no immediate comment from the Iran-backed group.
On Friday, the Israeli military said it struck weapon storage facilities intended to be used by Hezbollah in south Lebanon.
