Iran-US war latest: Trump ‘calls Netanyahu crazy’ in furious call as Hezbollah agrees to halt attacks

Donald Trump has reportedly berated Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a call aimed at ending fighting in Lebanon.

The US president is said to have told Netanyahu: “You're f***ing crazy”, adding, “Everybody hates Israel” because of its recent strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, according to one US official who summarised the call to Axios.

After the call Trump announced that Hezbollah had told the US, via intermediaries, that it would agree to stop attacks on Israel if Israel did likewise. Netanyahu told Trump that Israel would resume attacks on "terror" targets in Beirut if the ceasefire did not hold.

Lebanon confirmed a partial ceasefire had been agreed between Hezbollah and Israel, though there were already reports of violations on Tuesday morning.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah ‌said the militia would support a full ceasefire across all Lebanon as a precursor to the withdrawal of Israeli troops. But Netanyahu said Israel would continue military operations in southern Lebanon, where ground forces are pushing toward the Zaharani River, their deepest incursion in Lebanon in 25 years.

New Zealand bans three ‘extremist Israeli settlers’

New Zealand has joined partners including Australia and the EU in imposing travel bans on three "extremist Israeli settlers", the foreign minister said.

Winston Peters, in a statement this morning, said Itamar Yehuda Levi, Harel David Libi, and Eliav Libi “actively worked to expand illegal settlements in the West Bank".

“The actions of these individuals threaten peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians and drive the region further into crisis,” he said, adding that New Zealand’s policy is to support a two-state solution for Palestinians.

"This action is against three individuals whose use of violence and displacement is destabilising the West Bank," Peters added.

Trump attacks American media in yet another late-night post

04:25 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

US president Donald Trump has yet again criticised the American media in a late-night post on Truth Social over their coverage of the Iran war.

The president wrote: "If Iran surrenders, admits their Navy is gone and resting at the bottom of the sea, and their Air Force is no longer with us, and if their entire Military walks out of Tehran, weapons dropped and hands held high, each shouting 'I surrender, I surrender' while wildly waving the representative White Flag.

"... and if their entire remaining Leadership signs all necessary 'Documents of Surrender,' and admit their defeat to the great power and force of the magnificent U.S.A., The Failing New York Times, The China Street Journal (WSJ!), Corrupt and now Irrelevant CNN, and all other members of the Fake News Media, will headline that Iran had a Masterful and Brilliant Victory over The United States of America, it wasn’t even close.

"The Dumacrats and Media have totally lost their way. They have gone absolutely CRAZY!"

Israel says it intercepted projectiles despite ceasefire

04:15 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

The Israeli military early this morning said that it intercepted two projectiles that crossed from Lebanon into northern Israel, and that no injuries were reported.

The statement comes as hostilities in southern Lebanon, which Israel invaded in March, continued last night despite US president Donald Trump announcing a ceasefire.

The Israel-Hezbollah war erupted on 2 March as an offshoot of the broader conflict and has been entangled with it ever since.

Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would continue military operations in southern Lebanon, where ground forces are pushing towards the Zaharani River, their deepest incursion in Lebanon in 25 years.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah ‌said the militia would support a full ceasefire across all Lebanon as a precursor to the withdrawal of Israeli troops. He did not say whether the group would stop its strikes on Israeli territory.

Lebanon said it would seek to expand the ceasefire in talks with Israel in ‌Washington on Wednesday.

Lebanon announces partial ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah

04:00 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

Lebanon has announced a partial ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in what would amount to a limited de-escalation of a conflict that has killed thousands of people and inflamed the broader US-Israeli war with Iran.

According to Lebanon's embassy in Washington, the agreement would not end the conflict in that country. But it calls for Israel to refrain from strikes on Beirut and its suburbs controlled by Hezbollah, while the Iran-aligned group would halt its attacks on Israel.

US president Donald Trump, who first announced the agreement, said Hezbollah, through intermediaries, had pledged not to attack Israel. No US president has ever spoken with Hezbollah, with or without intermediaries.

Top US Democrat responds to Trump telling Americans he's 'in no hurry' to end Iran war

03:30 , Rachel Dobkin

US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has responded to Donald Trump telling Americans he's “in no hurry” to end the Iran war.

“If you’re gonna be in a hurry, you’re not gonna make a good deal”, the US president told Fox News Saturday. “Slowly, but surely, we’re getting, I think, what we want. And if we don’t get what we want, we’re gonna end it a different way”.

Schumer criticized Trump’s comments Monday evening, Washington time: “No hurry?”

“Tell that to our troops in harm’s way. Tell that to their families. Tell that to the Americans getting crushed by record gas prices at the pump.

“We will not stop fighting to end this war once and for all”, he wrote on X.

Gas prices have soared during the Iran war after Tehran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil passageway in the Middle East.

The average cost for a gallon of gas in the US currently sits at around $4.32. Gas prices were more than $5 per gallon in June 2022 under the Biden administration.

Ex-counterterrorism chief responds to Netanyahu's threat to Hezbollah

03:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Joe Kent, who resigned as Donald Trump’s director of the National Counterterrorism Center over the Iran war, has responded to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s threat to Hezbollah.

“Tonight, I spoke with President Trump and told him that if Hezbollah does not cease attacking our cities and citizens—Israel will attack terror targets in Beirut”, Netanyahu wrote on X Monday.

Kent said the prime minister’s comments “further demonstrates [sic] two fundamental truths that the Trump administration is not addressing”.

“We have fundamentally different objectives in Iran & the region than Israel does. Israel is determined to take out all threats & rivals, from Iran to Lebanon. They are comfortable with a brutal drawn out conflict. We are not, we want a deal with Iran & the [Strait of Hormuz] open”, Kent said.

“Iran believes they are winning by keeping control of the SOH & using Hezbollah in Lebanon, there is no lasting military solutions to either of these problems and we can’t win at the negotiating table with Iran controlling these two factors”, the ex-counterterrorism chief added.

Kent said the best thing the US can do in this situation is to “walk away”.

Special report: I was jailed for taking pictures in Iran – the next generation is fearless

When she was just 23 years old, Tahmineh Monzavi was imprisoned for her photography.

The Tehran-based photographer’s images of drug addicts and prostitutes in the poorer parts of her city were deemed “dangerous to society” by the Iranian regime. She spent a month in solitary confinement.

Her time in prison brought on panic attacks. “In addition, I got [an] autoimmune disease for the rest of my life,” she says from Tehran, “I lost my hair.”

She did not know how to treat the disease, and it began to attack her body. This was 2012, in the wake of the Arab Spring, when a wave of pro-democracy protests toppled dictators across the Middle East and North Africa. It was a highly sensitive and politically charged time in Iran.

JetBlue weighs raising prices as Iran crisis sends fuel costs soaring

Monday 1 June 2026 20:40 , Maira Butt

JetBlue has revised its second-quarter fuel cost projections upward, a move driven by persistent shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz that continue to pressure the global aviation sector amid escalating jet fuel prices.

The critical Strait, a crucial conduit for nearly a fifth of the world's oil and gas, has been impacted by U.S.-Israeli actions against Iran. Before these strikes in February, jet fuel averaged $85 to $90 a barrel.

By late May, it had surged to approximately $142 per barrel, according to the International Air Transport Association. This volatility has compelled airlines worldwide to increase passenger fares and baggage fees to offset rising expenses, alongside reducing flight frequencies and routes to conserve fuel.

As Iran war threatens undersea cables in the Strait of Hormuz, is it time to rethink the internet?

Monday 1 June 2026 19:40 , Maira Butt

When one of the world’s worst ever energy crises began in the Strait of Hormuz in February, few believed that their internet access – rather than their gas bill – would be the worst-affected aspect of daily life.

But lurking many thousands of metres beneath the oil ships being attacked by the Iranian navy lie a series of undersea cables that play a vital role in the global economy, helping to power our internet and keep the world connected.

Earlier this month, Tehran floated plans to impose tariffs on Strait of Hormuz submarine cables, warning that they were a vulnerable chokepoint for the region’s digital economy.

Trump now says US left Iran’s military ‘alone’ after weeks of boasting that he destroyed its forces

Monday 1 June 2026 19:10 , Maira Butt

Donald Trump has now said that Iran’s military was largely untouched by U.S. strikes over the past three months, contradicting countless statements he has made and continues to make about the scale of America’s successes in the ongoing war.

The president spoke in an interview that aired Saturday with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump on Fox News. As the war in Iran now runs past the three-month mark, the U.S. remains mired in a stalemate with Iran under the shadow of a shaky ceasefire that Trump is now considering an offer to extend for another 60 days.

A war that the president and his team have long insisted would be over in “days” or even just a few weeks is now at a flashpoint with the U.S. having proven largely unable to forcibly open the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global energy shipping traffic.

Azmoun, who boasts an impressive record of 57 goals in 91 international appearances, was a significant omission from both the preliminary and final selections. His exclusion comes despite a public plea for his return from Iran's Vice President, Abdolkarim Hosseinzadeh.

The Shabab Al-Ahli player was also left out of the national team in March, with local media reports suggesting he had been expelled for a perceived act of disloyalty to the government.

Netanyahu orders Israeli strike on southern Beirut as Lebanon conflict deepens

Monday 1 June 2026 16:40 , Maira Butt

Benjamin Netanyahu says he has ordered Israeli forces to strike Beirut’s southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh.

The order comes as the Israeli military expanded its incursion into southern Lebanon, pushing north of the Litani River and recapturing the strategic Beaufort Castle on Sunday 31 May, 44 years after it first occupied it.

Israel and Hezbollah have accused each other of violating the nominal ceasefire brokered by the United States, which officially began on 17 April.

“In light of the repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon by the terrorist organisation Hezbollah and the attacks on our cities and citizens, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and defence minister Israel Katz have instructed the IDF to strike terror targets in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut,” a joint statement from Mr Netanyahu and Mr Katz said.

In a post on X he said that the naval blockade imposed by the US and the “escalation of war crimes” by Israel in Lebanon are “clear evidence of US noncompliance with the ceasefire.”

“Every choice has a price, and the bill comes due. It will all fall into place,” he wrote.

The country intercepted a missile amid a fresh exchange of fire between the US and Tehran.

Iran says lack of trust, changing US position and Israeli actions in Lebanon delaying diplomatic process

Monday 1 June 2026 09:00 , Maira Butt

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, has blamed the US and Israel for delays in efforts to resolve the deadlocked conflict.

Baghaei cited a “lack of trust,” the US’s constant changes in position, and Israeli actions in Lebanon as reasons for the stalemate on Monday.

He said Iran believes a ceasefire in Lebanon is crucial to any agreement with the US.

He added that “US aggressive action” constitutes a ceasefire violation and led Iranian armed forces to target positions from which the US attack originated.

These exchanges mark the latest escalation amid ongoing negotiations to resolve a three-month-old conflict.

Trump now says US left Iran’s military ‘alone’ after weeks of boasting that he destroyed its forces

Monday 1 June 2026 06:30 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

Donald Trump has now said that Iran’s military was largely untouched by U.S. strikes over the past three months, contradicting countless statements he has made and continues to make about the scale of the U.S.’s successes in the ongoing war.

Negotiations continue, but details of a pending agreement to extend the ceasefire indicate that the sides are still far apart on the eventual question of Iran’s nuclear program, including its future enrichment capabilities.

US proposes new plan to ease Israel-Lebanon tensions

Monday 1 June 2026 04:17 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

US secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken with both Lebanese president Joseph Aoun and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the diplomatic negotiations between Israel and Lebanon and proposed a plan to allow for "gradual de-escalation", a US official said.

The US has proposed that as a first step, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group would stop all attacks on Israel and in return Israel would refrain from escalation in Beirut, the official told Reuters.

"This would create space for gradual de-escalation and an effective ‌cessation of hostilities," according to the official.

They added that Aoun tried to advance the proposal ‌and secure an agreement.

However, Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri, who claimed to "guarantee" Hezbollah's commitment to a ceasefire, placed the burden on Israel to stop "shooting first".

As the Pentagon pushes for battlefield AI, some military leaders urge caution

Monday 1 June 2026 03:00 , Alex Croft

The Trump administration is pushing to unleash the power of artificial intelligence for the U.S. military while facing calls to put up guardrails around the rapidly developing technology from some companies — and even notes of caution from top leaders in uniform.

Adm. Frank Bradley, head of U.S. Special Operations Command, told attendees of a recent annual special forces conference in Tampa, Florida, that troops “have to be very careful about how we come to (AI’s) employment and its inspiration into the delivery of lethality.”

Bradley said he can see a future where AI determines what targets to hit but that “we, as humans, have to have the confidence that ... it's going to deliver violence only where we intend it to be delivered.”

UK special relationship with US ‘meaningless’ unless it boosts defence, Hegseth warns

Monday 1 June 2026 02:01 , Alex Croft

The Independent’s political correspondent Millie Cooke reports...

Britain’s special relationship with the United States is “meaningless” unless it “locks arms and shields” with the US and matches its military capabilities, Donald Trump’s war secretary has warned.

Giving a speech in Singapore, Pete Hegseth said that “model allies” who comply with US demands will benefit from arms sales and access to intelligence, while those seen to be “freeloading” on US capabilities will be penalised.

Referring to conversations with the UK defence secretary, the politician said: “As my friends, Mr [Richard] Marles [the Australian defence minister] and John Healey know, I’m probably the most blunt with our closest friends about what our capabilities are and where they need to be to ensure that we’re locking arms and shields, considering the threats of the world.”

He continued: “You can’t just say, ‘Oh, we’ve been friends for a long time, so let’s work together.’ It’s: ‘We’ve been friends for a long time, so you better have the same capabilities we do, because if we don’t, our alliance is meaningless.’”

Mr Hegseth also vowed to move allies who step up their military capabilities to “the front of the line” when it comes to closer ties, praising countries such as South Korea, Japan and Vietnam.

Iranian commander warns of ‘more forceful’ retaliation

Monday 1 June 2026 01:01 , Alex Croft

Iran has warned that any new attack on its territory would trigger a stronger military response, as tensions remain high despite ongoing discussions over a possible ceasefire extension.

Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, Iran’s deputy army commander for coordination, said the country’s armed forces were prepared to respond to further military action.

“The enemy should know that any aggression against the country’s territory will be met with a response even more forceful than before,” he said, per Al Jazeera.

“Today, the army of the Islamic Republic stands firmly and resolutely against any hostile move by the enemy,” Sayyari added.

The warning comes as the US and Iran remain divided over a proposed agreement covering Tehran’s nuclear programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

It added that it was not known if supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei will accept the resignation.

The president’s deputy head of communications has denied the claims, saying Mr Pezeshkian would not be stepping down.

What is Beaufort Castle being occupied by Israel?

Sunday 31 May 2026 21:00 , Alex Croft

As we reported earlier, Israel has announced its occupation of Lebanon’s Beaufort Castle will remain in place as part of its security zone.

The Israeli military had already been striking in the area around the ancient structure as it deepens its invasion and occupation of southern parts of the country.

The 900-year-old Beaufort Castle was hit by Israeli strikes on Tuesday, as its bombardment of southern Lebanon killed 31 people and wounded another 40 in the deadliest day since a ceasefire was supposed to take hold, state news agency NNA reported.

The fortress has been described by UNESCO as one of the best-preserved examples of medieval castles in the region.

In Focus | As Iran war threatens undersea cables in the Strait of Hormuz, is it time to rethink the internet?

Sunday 31 May 2026 20:02 , Alex Croft

When one of the world’s worst ever energy crises began in the Strait of Hormuz in February, few believed that their internet access – rather than their gas bill – would be the worst affected aspect of daily life.

But lurking many thousands of metres beneath the oil ships being attacked by the Iranian navy lie a series of undersea cables that play a vital role in the global economy, helping to power our internet and keep the world connected.

Earlier this month, Tehran floated plans to impose tariffs on Strait of Hormuz submarine cables, warning that they were a vulnerable chokepoint for the region's digital economy.

Undersea internet cables form the backbone of all worldwide connectivity, enabling bank transfers, messaging, and critical services to function. But as global conflicts threaten crucial chokepoints through which they run, how can the critical cables be protected? Alex Croft reports

Israel's advance to Beaufort castle provides new vantage point

Sunday 31 May 2026 19:00 , Alex Croft

As we reported earlier, the Israeli military on Sunday issued a fresh evacuation warning for Southern Lebanon residents south of the Zaharani.

The Israeli advance also came as the US military hosted Israeli and Lebanese defence representatives in Washington on Friday to pursue a US-brokered plan to forge peace between the two countries and disarm Iran-backed Hezbollah. On May 15, the two sides agreed to extend the ceasefire by 45 days.

The advance into Beaufort Castle has granted Israeli troops a vantage point over much of southern Lebanon and northern Israel, from which attacks have been launched towards Israeli residential areas.

It was the first time Israel had held the site since May 2000, when Israel withdrew its troops from southern Lebanon after 18 years.

Trump lashes out at Pope Leo again over Iran

Sunday 31 May 2026 18:01 , Alex Croft

Here is everything you need to know in five bullet points with The Independent’s Bulletin.

  • Donald Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV regarding Iran's nuclear program, asserting that the country must be nuclear-free.
  • Trump reshared a social media post from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who had attended a prayer with Pope Leo at the Vatican.
  • In his comment, Trump suggested someone should inform the Pope that the Chicago Mayor is "useless" and that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.
  • This marks another instance of disagreement between Trump and Pope Leo concerning Iran, following Trump's earlier accusation that the pontiff was "endangering Catholics" by supporting Iran's nuclear ambitions.
  • Pope Leo responded by emphasizing the Church's mission to preach peace and its long-standing, clear opposition to all nuclear weapons.

He added that production from the three platforms was being routed to other processing plants in the region while repairs continue at damaged facilities, including the Phase 14 refinery.

After weeks of boasting that he’s destroyed Iran’s armed forces, Trump now says ‘we actually left their military alone’

Our Washington DC correspondent John Bowden writes:

Donald Trump has now said that Iran’s military was largely untouched by U.S. strikes over the past three months, contradicting countless statements he has made and continues to make about the scale of the U.S.’s successes in the ongoing war.

On Saturday Trump gave another description of the U.S. operation, and seemed to break from his past claims of having obliterated Iran’s military.

After saying Iran’s navy and air force were “totally gone”, the president then commented on Iran’s “military”, telling Lara Trump: “Their military, we’ve sort of left it alone, because we think that their military is somewhat, somewhat moderate....We've actually left their military alone. People would be surprised to hear that."

Israeli army captures strategic castle in Lebanon in deepest incursion into country in 26 years

Sunday 31 May 2026 16:01 , Alex Croft

Israeli troops have captured a strategic mountain topped with a Crusader-built castle in southern Lebanon in the deepest incursion of the country in more than a quarter-century, the military said Sunday.

The capture of Beaufort castle, near the city of Nabatiyeh, came after days of airstrikes and intense fighting in nearby villages where Israeli troops fought Hezbollah members in the rugged area.

Its capture marks a major development in the latest Israel-Hezbollah war, which began on March 2 when Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel two days after the U.S. and Israel attacked its main backer, Iran.
