Iranian footballers held up pictures of children killed in an alleged US-Israeli strike ahead of their match against Costa Rica on Tuesday (31 March).
Players, coaches and federation officials displayed photographs of children killed during an airstrike on a school in Minab on 28 February as the national anthem played prior to the match, held in Turkey.
The protest took place in front of Gianni Infantino, an ally of Donald Trump, who had flown to promise to “continue to support” the Iran team ahead of travelling to the US in June for the World Cup.
“We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy,” he told AFP at half-time.
