IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans laid low at home by Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals stroll to six-wicket win after dismissing GT for 89

AHMEDABAD: An incisive bowling performance and a superb fielding effort was backed by aggressive batting as the Delhi Capitals produced an all-round display to stroll to a six-wicket triumph over Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Wednesday.

Chasing a paltry 90 set by the hosts, the Capitals raced to the target in 8.5 overs with Rishabh Pant (16) and Sumit Kumar (5) guiding the team home with 67 balls to spare.

Jake Fraser-McGurk began with a lofted six but was caught for 20 (off 10b, 2x4, 2x6) by Abhinav Manohar off Spencer Johnson's bowling. Prithvi Shaw (7), Abhishek Porel (15) and Shai Hope (19), too, batted aggressively and though they got out cheaply, the small target meant Capitals eased to the target with consummate ease while boosting their net run rate.

Earlier, Pant won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Capitals' incisive bowling display helped them bowl out Titans for 89, their lowest total over the three seasons they have been competing in, in 17.2 overs.

After two boundaries on either side of the wicket, Titans captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 8 after he spooned a fuller length ball by Ishant Sharma (2/8) to Shaw at cover. Wriddhiman Saha (2), back in the squad after missing last two matches, tried to break the shackles but was bowled off an inside edge off Mukesh Kumar's short-of-length ball.

Number three batter Sai Sudharsan's vigil was cut short by Sumit''s excellent piece of fielding. Stationed at mid wicket, Kumar, replacing the injured David Warner, rushed to the ball, dived and threw at the base of the stumps to end the southpaw's stay.

David Miller was caught brilliantly by a wrong-footed Pant for 2 after he inside-edged an Ishant delivery that angled into him. Pant was initially going to his right before flinging himself to his left to take the catch and leave the Titans reeling at 30/4.

Abhinav Manohar and Rahul Tewatia looked to build the innings slowly but the part-time off-spin of Tristan Stubbs (2/11) had the former stumped brilliantly by Pant while impact player Shahrukh Khan too was stumped off his first ball with the ball deflecting of Pant's thigh to further reduce the hosts to 48/6.

Tewatia then joined forces with last-match hero Rashid Khan, hoping to take the Titans to a competitive total. But the former was trapped in front by a spinning delivery from Axar Patel for 10.
