Iowa's Patrick McCaffery, son of Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery, has made the decision to enter the transfer portal, as confirmed by the school on Wednesday. McCaffery, a 6-foot-9, 212-pound forward, has one year of eligibility remaining after starting 60 of 123 games during his time with the Hawkeyes.
During the 2023-24 season, McCaffery was a key contributor, starting as a forward and averaging 8.9 points per game. He notably scored a team-high 19 points in Iowa's recent loss at Utah in the NIT tournament.
McCaffery's basketball career has been marked by resilience and determination. At the age of 13, he battled thyroid cancer and underwent two surgeries. Remarkably, he was declared cancer-free just three months after his diagnosis. Additionally, McCaffery faced challenges last season when he missed six games due to anxiety symptoms that affected his sleep, appetite, and energy levels.
Having taken a redshirt season in 2019-20, McCaffery spent his first three years in the program alongside his older brother, Connor. Despite his son's decision to transfer, Fran McCaffery, the head coach of the Hawkeyes, has expressed that he has no intentions of retiring at the age of 64.
