Investigation launched after bizarre claims pet cats were shaved in Scots town

An investigation has been launched amid claims that someone has been shaving pet cats in Sauchie.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after receiving the bizarre reports.

One caller reported that their mother’s long-haired cat had been shaved along the stomach, rear end and legs.

Scottish SPCA inspector, Mairi Wright, said, “On May 12, we received a report from a member of the public who was shocked to see that their mother’s female long-haired cat had returned home with areas of her fur shaved.

“After posting about the incident on social media, they discovered that several other neighbours have experienced the same thing.”

A woman took to a Sauchie community Facebook page earlier this month to detail the incident.

She posted: ‘Around about Tuesday, May 3, we were shocked when my mum’s female cat came back home and her genital area, down the inside of back legs and her belly were shaved right down to the skin. This has obviously been very disturbing.

'In law, cats are regarded as property, so someone has technically damaged my mum’s property and this is an offence. Who would do such a thing? She would have been held down against her will for this to happen to her. She would have put up a fight. I have reported this to the police and Cat Protection and also the SSPCA. This has happened in the Deerpark Sauchie/Mount William area.”

Mairi Wright added: “We would urge anyone who has experienced something similar to report the incident to our confidential helpline.

“We understand that someone may think they are helping the cats stay cool as the weather warms up, or be trying to remove matted fur but this is not the proper way to do it.

“If anyone has had this happen to their pet or has any information on this incident they can contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
