A man's body has been found with a gunshot wound to the neck on a busy central Queensland road.

Witnesses heard what they believed were multiple gunshots in the area and more than one vehicle leaving "at speed" before the body was found, police say.

A member of the public called triple zero to report a man lying on the road at Norman Gardens outside Rockhampton before 4am on Friday.

Detective Superintendent Darrin Shadlow said police and paramedics attended and found the man - believed to be in his 30s - with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the neck.

Paramedics performed CPR but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Det Shadlow said it appeared the man, who is yet to be identified, had not been at the scene long.

A crime scene has been established at the busy Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road, with specialist investigators arriving from Brisbane to assist on Friday.

"We have spoken to some people in that area who ... heard what they believe were gunshots just before the triple-0 call came in - it was multiple shots heard," Det Shadlow told reporters.

"The witnesses that we have spoken to believe they heard more than one vehicle departing the scene at speed."

Det Shadlow did not believe the community should be concerned.

"I don't believe it was a random attack," he said.

"Obviously investigations are continuing, however I do not believe there is any cause for alarm for members of the public."

Traffic has been diverted with the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road expected to be closed for hours on Friday.

"It's a very busy area. I do apologise for any inconvenience to the public but obviously this is a very serious investigation and it needs to be treated as such," Det Shadlow said.
