A jet-setting frog is being cared for by a specialist exotics centre after being found in a bag of fresh herbs which had arrived in the UK from Africa.
The frog, which has been named Minty, is being looked after by the RSPCA after a customer found him amongst the fresh mint.
It was only when the shopper arrived home with her groceries that they discovered the spotted-green frog before contacting the animal welfare group.
Minty is now in the care of Lucy Green, the RSPCA inspector who is trying to establish what species the animal is after his intrepid 6,000 mile trip.
Lucy Green said: “I have an exotics set-up at my home and Minty’s been fine under the lighting and heating. He’s fine, he’s been eating well and he’s certainly not skinny.”
The sealed bag of leaves was imported from Ethiopia to a fruit and veg shop in Corbridge, Northumberland. Lucy has sent a photo of Minty to a specialist exotics centre in West Yorkshire who will give Minty a new home, according to Birmingham Live.
Every year, Brits call the RSPCA to report finding creatures from abroad. Among them are frogs, geckos and other lizards who have taken up residence in holiday luggage or foodstuffs from other countries.
It’s unlikely that the creatures will be returned to their natural habitats, the RSPCA says. They’re usually re-homed with specialists.
