Interstellar returns to big screen with London live concert performance with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Calling all Interstellar fans! An epic live concert performance of Hans Zimmer’s iconic score is coming to London.

Interstellar: Live will see the 65-piece Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra perform the Oscar and BAFTA-nominated score, conducted by Matt Dunkley, a frequent collaborator of Zimmer’s.

They will also be accompanied by Roger Sayer, the organist personally selected by Zimmer to perform the original Christopher Nolan soundtrack.

Fans will have two opportunities to witness the spectacle at The O2, London, with a matinee and evening performance set for May 23, 2027.

O2 Priority pre-sale tickets are released this Wednesday, September 9, at 9am, whilst tickets for the general public are on sale on Friday, 11 September, also at 9am.

The orchestra is made up of sixteen violins, eight violas, eight cellos and four double basses, who will be joined by a full complement of woodwind and brass – including flutes, oboes, cor anglais, clarinets, bassoons, contrabassoon, horns, trombones and tuba – alongside harp, two pianos, two keyboards and a percussion section featuring bass marimba, large bass drum and timpani.

“Together, they will bring the score’s vast orchestral crescendos, driving rhythms and extraordinary range of textures to life on an arena scale,” event organisers said.

Released in 2014, Nolan’s epic sci-fi film follows Matthew McConaughey as former NASA pilot Cooper, who leaves his family and a drying earth behind to search for a new planet that could become humanity’s new home.

Starring Anne Hathaway, Sir Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, and Casey Affleck, the film was released to widespread critical acclaim and received five Academy Award Nominations and won Best Visual Effects.

Its soundtrack also garnered universal acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

The soundtrack heavily features an organ, which serves as the primary instrument for the score. Zimmer and Nolan chose to use the 1926 four-manual Harrison & Harrison organ of the Temple Church, London.

Organist Sayer was specifically requested by Zimmer to play the instrument for the film’s score.

“[Sayer’s inclusion] gives audiences at The O2 the opportunity to hear one of the musicians behind the original recording perform this extraordinary music live,” event organisers said.
