International Efforts To Combat Militias In Haiti And DRC

Meeting on security situation in Haiti in New York

In a recent press conference, President Biden and President Ruto discussed the collective responsibility of nations in addressing the crises in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). President Ruto emphasized that gangs and criminals do not adhere to national boundaries and stressed the need for a firm and decisive approach within the confines of the law.

Regarding Haiti, President Biden highlighted the importance of a multinational approach with Haiti taking the lead, supported by intelligence and equipment from other nations. President Ruto mentioned the coalition of nations contributing to the Multinational Security and Stabilization Force (MSS) in Haiti to combat the criminal elements causing suffering in the country.

Shifting the focus to the DRC, President Ruto outlined the efforts of the African Union (AU), the East African community, and Kenya in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the region. Kenya has deployed troops to both Haiti and the DRC, with additional support from the Southern African Development Community (SADC). President Ruto emphasized the need for dialogue as opposed to a purely military solution in the DRC, highlighting the displacement of millions of people in the region.

The AU, the East African community, and Kenya are actively engaged in finding solutions to the challenges faced by the DRC. President Ruto expressed gratitude to the United States for providing humanitarian support to the region and underscored the collaborative efforts of various countries in addressing the crisis.
