The 2022-23 NBA season started uncomfortably for the Boston Celtics. Reports about Ime Udoka surfaced, leading to him being suspended for the entire season.
Now, however, they seem to be making great progress under interim head coach Joe Mazzulla.
Mazzulla has done an excellent job bringing the team together and putting a great product out on the floor. He may soon have his interim tag lifted should the Udoka situation be resolved, Even if he doesn’t, he will get credit for the entirety of the 2022-23 season.
Per Marc Stein, “Some good news for the Celtics’ 11-3 rookie coach: Mazzulla will actually get official credit for every game he coaches this season.”
Stein, in his most recent Stein Line newsletter, wrote he “double-checked with the league office this week and confirmed that Mazzulla will be the coach of record whether or not the team lifts his interim tag. The bookkeeping rules are amended when an interim coach is granted an entire season in charge.”

Getting credit is definitely well-deserved after such a great start, winning 11 games and having two of the three loses come in overtime. The team is in fantastic form right now winning eight straight, but it is a long season and anything can happen between now and April.
