‘Interactive Zoo’ to takeover city as part of Manchester Day celebrations

Adding to this year’s beach theme, Manchester Day is to be flooded with ‘zoo animals’ later this month. As part of the annual parade through the city, an interactive zoo installation will be taking over New Cathedral Street.

Street artists and performers will be transforming themselves into lions, orangutans, kangaroos and even a hippopotamus for the Manchester Day On Holiday event, which happens on July 29. Families and kids will be invited to get up close to the animal performers on the day.

Meanwhile, the street will be transformed into a ‘mesmerising tropical rainforest’, thanks to the event’s creative partner Walk The Plank. The interactive zoo will happen from 12pm to 6pm at New Cathedral Street.

Councillor Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: “With Manchester Day on Holiday approaching we’re so excited to start telling people know what we’ve been planning.

“People will be able to have an afternoon of roarsome fun in St Ann’s Square with the whole square becoming a zoo for the day. But don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for what else we’ve got planned for Manchester Day on Holiday - don’t miss out on a wild time!”

The theme of this year's event is 'on holiday' (Walk The Plank)

There will be other activities going on from 12pm to 9pm across the city, including music and dance to a traditional helter skelter and sand sculptures.

Pat added: “Mark the day in your calendars and get ready for Manchester to be the number one holiday destination on the 29th July. People always say that the only thing Manchester doesn't have is a beach, well, not for long!

"The seaside in the city centre is one of the many new and unexpected events that we will be organising this year. We can’t wait to reveal what else we’ve got planned, keep your eyes peeled!"
