Thousands of tenants are facing homelessness when the eviction ban is lifted at the end of this month.
Activist group Uplift have shared an interactive map which allows tenants facing eviction to share their feelings. The map is broken down by county and, as of 10am on Tuesday morning, 43 Dublin tenants have shared their fears.
However, this is much smaller than the actual number facing eviction as figures released by the Residential Tenancies Board show 4,741 Notices of Termination were issued between July and September of last year. These notices will become active when the eviction ban is lifted and severely impacts the housing crisis.
Here are some of the thoughts of those facing homelessness:
Aine said: "We're an older couple and will be evicted in 2024 due to our home being sold. We've been on the housing list for 14 years. I'm disabled and our apt has steps outside (with no lift) and stairs inside."
Saoirse said: "Myself, my husband and our 3 kids aged 4, 2.5 and 3 months are being evicted. We have no family to turn to and are terrified of what's to come with no emergency accommodation and no response from rentals or the council. We feel very disregarded and ignored."
Denzel said: "I paid for my landlord's mortgage over 16 years and now he's kicking my family out of the house we paid for, what do we do? Please help."
Paul said: "I am facing eviction from the home I have rented for the past 8 years. I live here with my daughter (who is 9 years old). I work and pay taxes and have never missed a rent payment. The owner has decided to sell up. I have searched far and wide and there is nowhere for us to move to. The government have failed me and I implore the council to step and and buy our home and rent it back to us."
Eamon said: "I'm due to be evicted on the 31st March from our home of 12 years. My teenage daughter is already suffering with the idea of having to change schools and losing friendships. I'm a well-educated contributing member of my community.
"I've held a good job for over 18 years. What a dysfunctional country this is that even on a good salary I'm looking down the barrel of homelessness. Our government see my daughter and I as just another number, a statistic they can write off. We are human beings and deserve to have security of tenure. We matter!"
