Instant analysis of Packers taking TE Luke Musgrave in second round of 2023 draft

The Green Bay Packers used the 42nd overall pick on Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave.

Here’s our instant analysis of the Packers taking Musgrave in the second round:

Zach Kruse

Musgrave was the pick at No. 42 in my Day 2 mock draft. He’s coming off a season-ending knee injury, but he tested like one of the best athletes ever at the tight end position and his early 2022 tape is littered with impressive receiving moments. He can run, threaten deep, stretch the seam and make contested catches, and his experience as a run-blocker in-line in Oregon State’s system gives him a foundation of dual-threat ability. In my opinion, Musgrave has the highest ceiling of any tight end in the class. He’s going to be able to help Jordan Love and the Packers early in his career, and there’s Pro Bowl potential if he develops right during his rookie deal. This is a great match of need and potential.

Brandon Carwile

I can’t lie, Sam Laporta and Michael Mayer going back to back was a bit concerning, but the Packers remained patient and got their guy. Are there some red flags with Musgrave? Yes. Injuries and production are the two of the biggest knocks against him, but you can’t argue with the traits he shows on the field. Green Bay got an extremely athletic pass catcher who can stretch the field and be a great asset to Jordan Love. Matt LaFleur will have a lot of fun working Musgrave into the scheme both as a traditional in-line tight end and in the slot.

Brennen Rupp

Luke Musgrave is dripping with tools. You can’t teach that size and speed. If it weren’t for a season-ending injury, Musgrave would have enjoyed a monster season for the Beavers. He has all the tools to develop into a mismatch nightmare. He’s wired right as a blocker and he logged 328 career special teams snaps with a blocked that he returned for a touchdown. Jordan Love gets a weapon.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 12, Oregon State TE Luke Musgrave

Paul Bretl

The Packers finally get their tight end in Luke Musgrave. In a deep tight end class, Musgrave’s speed is what separated him from the others. He will provide the Packers with a big slot presence and add some needed playmaking to the tight end position both over the middle of the field and down the seam. At least early on, Musgrave’s impact will be felt more in the passing game than the run game.
