The Miami Dolphins entered the Thursday night matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals having won their first three games, but they were defeated 27-15 at Paycor Stadium.
Early in the game, Miami had some success moving the ball through the air, but they couldn’t sustain their drives long enough to get into the endzone. Tua Tagovailoa underthrew Tyreek Hill in double coverage for his third interception of the season.
However, the biggest story of the game happened in the second quarter when Tagovailoa suffered another huge hit on a sack by Josh Tupou. Tagovailoa was stretchered off the field after landing on his back and head. Thankfully, the Dolphins announced that he has movements in all of his extremities.
Unfortunately, the game was to go on with Teddy Bridgewater in at quarterback. The veteran was able to lead a touchdown drive right before the end of the half, finding Chase Edmonds on a shuffle-pass.
Defensively, Miami struggled, allowing 14 points in the first half. They did have a big stop on a key fourth down, but they also allowed Tee Higgins, who was covered by Xavien Howard, to record a 59-yard touchdown.
Special teams weren’t great either, as Jason Sanders had a field goal blocked and missed an extra point that went off of the upright.
Miami’s defense, in the second half, allowed 13 points in the form of two field goals and a touchdown reception by Hayden Hurst. That’s not terrible, especially considering Howard left the game in the third quarter and was replaced by special teams ace Keion Crossen, who was beaten by Ja’Marr Chase for a big gain on the touchdown drive.
The final two quarters didn’t bring much for the Dolphins, offensively, either. The only points they were able to score were from a 20-yard field goal. Bridgewater was able to drive at times, but an interception just outside of the red zone ended the team’s chances of winning.
While Mike McDaniel’s team dropped to 3-1, all eyes will be on Tagovailoa during this mini bye week.
