Inspiring teenager's 'awe-inspiring compassion' that helped refugees fleeing war settle in to Leeds school

An inspiring Leeds schoolboy has won an award for his role helping Afghan refugees when they arrived at his school.

Amran Neshat, 16, won Young Person of the Year at the Child Friendly Leeds Awards on Tuesday, July 5. Amran won his award for using his fluency in Darsi/Farsi to help Afghan refugees settle in at John Smeaton Academy in East Leeds.

The award recognised that the new pupils are thriving at John Smeaton, after Amran helped with the language barrier to put them at ease, help them and teachers with translation and encouraged other students to give a warm welcome. The awards, which celebrate places, people and organisations making Leeds child friendly, praised Amran's 'awe-inspiring compassion'.
