Inspirational Ayrshire schoolboy on a mission to save the homeless this Christmas

An inspirational schoolboy is on a mission to save the homeless this Christmas.

Charlie McLean is fed up knowing there are others who are left with nothing.

At the age of only six, the selfless lad from Prestwick is campaigning to change the fortunes who those living on the streets.

As temperatures plummet across Ayrshire, Charlie hopes his bags of supplies can be a lifeline people sleeping rough.

In just four weeks, he has managed to collect an incredible 60 care packages, with each package full of essentials to deal the harsh weather.

Now he has set his sights on hitting 100 with a Go Fund Me also raising cash to go towards supporting those in dire need.

Charlie revealed his big Christmas plans to mum Victoria, 26, and dad Allan, 31, last month.

Proud Victoria McLean, 26, told Ayrshire Live: “We can’t explain how proud we are of him.

“He just came down the stairs one night after playing his PlayStation and said ‘I’ve been thinking about the homeless again. It’s not fair. I’m getting all this stuff and they are living on the streets with nothing’.

“He’s just such a caring and loving wee boy.”

Victoria believes that Charlie’s mission is three years in the making after he first offered people in Glasgow sleeping rough on the streets leftover pizza.

Charlie has received the backing of MSP Siobhian Brown (Siobhian Brown)

Back then he was only three-years-old with his parents left stunned as he approached people asking them why they were there.

Victoria said: “We were up in Glasgow at Elfingrove.

“On the way home we were out for dinner and we had loads of pizza left over.

“I asked them to box it up and Charlie just pointed out there was loads of people living on the street and that they didn’t have any food.

“Me and Allan were a bit like ‘maybe don’t go so close Charlie’, but Charlie wanted to speak to them. They were all so nice when he spoke to them.

“He remembers speaking to one guy who was in his twenties. He was just out of the army and had nowhere to go.

Donations have been flooding in (Submitted/ Ayrshire Live)

“I remember him saying to me ‘it is not bad people on the streets mum, it’s people from the army."

That experience left a lasting impression on the now-Heathfield Primary pupil.

Dad Allan used his plastering business to drive donations as Charlie fronted the campaign, doing live blogs to thank people for donations.

Each care package contains winter warmers including hats, scarves, gloves, socks and foil blankets to wrap up in freezing conditions.

The bags also contain a refillable water bottle which anyone can use to fill up for free where there is a tap available, and toiletries.

And Charlie’s mission has gone all the way to the corridors of Holyrood, with MSP Siobhian Brown putting through a motion in Parliament for the youngster.

Victoria added: “It is all Charlie’s idea, we are just doing the social media because he is six.

“Charlie made up wee leaflets and started handing them out.

“We’ve used Allan’s business page to reach out and see if people want to help us the response has been amazing.

“It really took off when Siobhian Brown shared his story. People have been so kind to support him.”

Charlie’s bags will go towards helping local organisations, with SeAscape, Riverside Church and Wheels in Motion Foodbank in Ayr all set to benefit.

Victoria added: “We don’t want him to see a world where he thinks there is nothing that he can do to help people.

“If you think you can do something, then you can try. Charlie is certainly proving that.”
