Inspectors regrade leadership at Perthshire care home after follow-up visit

Inspectors have judged leadership at a Perthshire care home for people with learning disabilities is improving after previously marking it as “weak” over concerns about its cleanliness.

The Care Inspectorate declared priority action was required to address its concerns about infection prevention and control at ASC Orchard Court and Dalguise north of Balbeggie last year.

Assessors said at that time changes needed to be made rapidly to ensure residents were cared for in an environment that was safe, well-maintained and minimised the risk of infection.

They recommended the premises and its furnishings and equipment always be kept clean and tidy, enhanced cleaning schedules and regular quality assurance checks be put in place and clinical waste be stored and disposed of safely.

Inspectors have now regraded leadership at the home, which is owned and managed by Advanced Specialist Care, a part of the Balhousie Care Group, as “adequate” after noting the above requirements had been met during a recent unannounced follow-up visit.

Their latest inspection report on ASC Orchard Court and Dalguise, which can provide accommodation and care for up to 24 adults at a time, said: “The management team had given full attention as to how the care home could be kept clean and safe to the standard expected.

“Staff members had been given guidance regarding the home’s environment and steps that will keep it clean.

“At this follow-up visit, it was clear to us many actions had been taken to minimise the risk of infection spread for people and there were clear improvements to be seen.

“Comprehensive cleaning schedules had been developed and staff were assigned different checks and cleaning tasks to maintain the care home to a good level.

“Cleaning staff also had revised schedules to follow. Staff showed a good level of commitment to ensuring people’s home was clean and safe.”

The report shows inspectors paid their follow-up visit to ASC Orchard Court and Dalguise on September 23 last year - six days after the date they determined the above requirements ought to have been met following their earlier inspection.
