President Donald Trump's campaign-season economic pitch is taking the shape of a sprawling direct-benefits agenda: a proposed $5,000 payment for adult citizens if Republicans hold Congress, $500 Obamacare rebates before Election Day, new long-term investment accounts for children and a still-developing plan to subsidize some stay-at-home parents.
The programs are not all at the same stage, nor would they be paid for in the same way. But together, they amount to an unusually explicit effort to put money, or the promise of money, at the center of the 2026 midterm elections.
