Inside the Alexandra in North Shields as pub re-opens its doors after £210k refurbishment

A popular North Shields local pub has re-opened its doors after undergoing a stylish £210,000 refurbishment.

The Alexandra on Queen Alexandra Road has had a complete revamp to turn it into the ultimate entertainment venue for pubgoers. Among the new additions are eight TVs, with BT Sport and Sky Sports to allow the pub to screen some of the biggest events in the sporting calendar for punters.

The pub is run by North Shields couple Dave and Christine Johnson, who have more than 25 years of experience in the industry and are excited to be at the helm for the Alexandra's new chapter. Dave said: "Myself and Christine grew up in North Shields and know how important pubs like the Alexandra are to the local community.

"Bringing people together is of the utmost importance to us, and we have a whole host of plans in the pipeline to make sure there is plenty of entertainment on offer here at the pub for local people," he added. A new pool table, illuminated dartboards, and gaming machines have also been added to the pub as part of its swanky refit.

The Alexandra is also set to run a jam-packed line-up of entertainment, with something for pubgoers to look forward to each day of the week. Mondays kick off with Race Day throughout the day, while Tuesdays see the second Race Day of the week as well as Men's Darts League in the evenings.

Games of bingo take place on both Wednesday and Thursday daytime, while Pool League fixtures are on Wednesday evenings and a Digital Quiz takes place on Thursday evenings. Weekends at the Alexandra kick off with a 60s and 70s DJ takeover in the evening, with a Sports Social throughout the day on Saturday followed by an evening of bingo and karaoke.

The week then finishes off with with Sunday's Sports Social throughout the day, followed by the pub’s second Pool League fixture of the week and live performances from local singers in the evening. The pub is open seven days a week from 10am until midnight.

Dave said: "We’re so proud of the pub’s new look and both myself and my wife Christine are really excited for the future of this great pub. We have a range of new entertainment going on at the pub throughout the week, which alongside our new look makes the Alexandra a must-try for both locals and passers-by."

The pub has received rave reviews from locals in recent months even before its £210k refit, with one person writing on Google: "Enjoyed an excellent atmosphere at The Alexandra karaoke last night. Most helpful and friendly staff made us feel welcome as if we were regulars."

Another happy customer wrote: "The service in the Alexander is next to none. Sports, pool, darts, and all better prices than most pubs and bars."

"Good bar, plenty of choice, staff are polite and professional," a third visitor said. "Was karaoke night which was great fun singing and dancing. Definitely recommend a visit here."
