It’s fair to say Manchester’s a pretty amazing place. Visitors flock from all over to soak up the buzz of the city, from incredible bars and restaurants to a thriving music scene.
Yet from time to time it can be nice to get away from it all. If you’re visiting the area then a base further out can be a good option, allowing you to sample what the city has to offer while enjoying a restful stay.
Just under an hour’s drive from the city centre in the Rossendale valley are two Grade II listed cottages available to rent on Airbnb. Tastefully renovated by their owners, the cottages have been described as “absolutely stunning” by guests and have received five star reviews on the holiday rental website.

Merrifield's Luxury Holiday Cottages are two adjacent cottages which can be booked separately or together and date back to the 18th century. They have a quintessential country cottage appearance from the outside, but step through the door and you’ll discover a contemporary interior.
With breathtaking views of the beautiful scenery right on their doorstep these cottages provide guests with a place to relax and unwind. They both have luxury furnishings inside, while also offering a home from home experience.
Robin Cottage sleeps up to five guests with two super king bedrooms and one single bedroom. Outside is an enclosed garden with an outdoor seating area and a fire pit, so you can sit out until late. Or if you’re feeling up to it, wake up early and watch the sunrise from here with your morning coffee.
Inside is a modern open-plan kitchen and living space, with exposed wooden beams providing rustic charm. A review of the cottage left by Christian said: “Our stay here was absolutely incredible. Easily the best Airbnb we have ever stayed.”
Coutts' Roost Cottage sleeps up to five guests over two bedrooms, with a daybed in the snug which can be made up into a fifth bed. The master bedroom has a modern king-size four poster bed and offers gorgeous views of the countryside.
It has a large living and dining area with comfy leather sofas where you can curl up and relax, while the kitchen has everything you’d need during your stay. One guest, Lucy, wrote: “Absolutely stunning property…beautiful garden with incredible views.”
Both cottages can accommodate two small well-behaved dogs, at an additional cost of £20 to be paid upon booking. There are parking spaces for two cars per cottage and an electric vehicle charging point.
The historic mill town of Waterfoot is just a stone’s throw away from the cottages and there are several pubs nearby. The Mary Towneley Loop, a 47 mile circular walk, cycle and horse ride track, is right by the cottages.
Prices start from £150 per night. For more information and to book, click here for Robin Cottage and here for Coutt's Roost.
