Inside the abandoned creepy Edinburgh mansion once used as a children's home

Urban explorers have shared images inside a creepy abandoned children's home in Edinburgh.

Posted by the Youtube account, SzDan, two urban explorers ventured into the derelict home to get the behind the scenes images. The abandoned mansion can be seen fenced off and boarded up as plans to turn the building into flats were proposed.

However, this hasn't come to fruition. Redhall House carries a controversial reputation with the former institution having been investigated in the past over maltreatment of children - and the property has been left to rot since 2008.

Paint can be seen peeling off the walls, with layers collecting on the spiralling staircase. Old fireplaces can be seen to still be intact and while some rooms lie empty, others have been used to store what looks like scaffolding poles.

The historic property was built in 1758 for George Inglis of Auchendinny using sandstone from Redhall Castle and has had many uses down the years, including a children's home from the 1940s for three decades.

It remains 'at risk' on the Building at Risk Register for Scotland, Listed Building Consent but back in 2019, it was conditionally granted that the building was to be refurbished into six flats. However, four years later, there is still no signs of any development.

The rooms still hold traditional features, including wall paneling and traditional radiators on the wall. But with all the windows boarded up and paint chipping, it no longer offers that grand feeling it once did in its heyday.

Known as Redhall House, it was built in the style of a French chateau. Around 1900, the two storey property was extended to feature a new porch, a west wing, and it was also re-roofed with some new red tiles.

In 1944, Redhall House was acquired by Edinburgh Corporation and served as a children’s home until 1978 when Graysmill and Cairnpark schools were built in the grounds.

Later, it was used by City of Edinburgh Council as a place to train staff before being sold to a developer Dildar Gold for more than £1.7 million in 2008.
