Inside John Galliano's Upcoming Costume Institute Feature: The Met's Boldest Spring 2027 Exhibition Yet

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has confirmed that John Galliano will be the focus of its spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, a decision that immediately places him among a very short list of designers granted that honor. Titled "John Galliano: Horizons," the show will make him only the third living designer to receive a solo exhibition at the Met, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017. The announcement, made by the museum, has already reshaped conversations around the upcoming Met Gala, which will take Horizons as its guiding theme in May 2027.

Why the Met Chose John Galliano for This Feature

Curator Andrew Bolton built the show around a simple but loaded question: how does a museum honor extraordinary creative work while acknowledging the damage its maker once caused. Galliano was dismissed from Christian Dior and his own label in 2011 after making antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian remarks, and he was later convicted in a Paris court for public insults tied to race, religion, and national origin. Rather than glossing over that chapter, the Met has stated plainly that the exhibition will not offer a tidy story of disgrace followed by redemption. Instead, it aims to examine how artistic achievement, personal accountability, and institutional recognition sit alongside one another, often uncomfortably.
