Inside Erik ten Hag's first day at Carrington as Manchester United close in on Frenkie de Jong

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Tuesday, June 28.

What Erik ten Hag did on the first day of pre-season at Carrington

Erik ten Hag held court with United staff and players on their first day of pre-season training yesterday.

Ten Hag was driven into United's Carrington training complex at 8am, shortly followed by assistants Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag. Ten Hag held meetings with his staff and the players throughout the day. United players started returning for pre-season medicals on Friday and the first batch of players on Monday turned up at around 9.30am to meet their new manager.

The players underwent routine medical tests and gym work before heading out onto the training pitches in the afternoon. Club sources say Ten Hag addressed a combined group of first-team squad members and Under-21 players for "several minutes" at the start of the session, flanked by McClaren and Van der Gaag.

United hopeful of reaching De Jong transfer agreement soon

United and Barcelona are hopeful of reaching an agreement for the transfer of Frenkie de Jong as he prepares to return from holiday this week.

United are understood to have submitted an improved bid for De Jong, 25, last week and sources say it is a matter of "when, not if" the deal is finalised.

Protracted discussions between the clubs are still progressing, although weekend reports of an agreement are believed to be inaccurate. Ten Hag is pushing to secure De Jong, whom he developed at Ajax, as his first signing.

Spanish sources say Barcelona coach Xavi has explained the situation to De Jong, who was initially reluctant to leave his "dream club" but Ten Hag has assuaged his concerns about joining United.
