One brother, Martin, was a member of the Kilkenny hurling panel as a substitute goalkeeper for a period of time and one sister, Catriona Carey, was a member of the Ireland women's national field hockey team as well as being part of the Kilkenny senior camogie team.

It isn’t just his immediate family that was involved in sports, many members of DJ’s extended family also played hurling and camogie. His aunt Peggy Carey won four All-Ireland camogie titles with Kilkenny and his granduncle, Paddy Phelan, was an inter-county hurler of the 1930s and was selected on the GAA Hurling Team of the Century and the GAA Team of The Millennium.

One brother died in a farming accident while young, and another passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Playing for Kilkenny

DJ became known as a hurler while he was in school and proceeded to play for Kilkenny minor and senior teams.

He is considered by many to be one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game, having won nine All-Star awards, as well as being named Texaco Hurler of the Year on two occasions.

DJ retired in 2006 following 138 National League and Championship appearances.

He married his first wife Christine in the 90s, with whom they share two children. The pair split in 2003 however and divorced in 2004, selling the Kilkenny home they had together. He has said the two remain good friends.

One year later the hurler announced his relationship with entrepreneur Sarah Newman publicly. The pair were engaged before they separated in 2012.

Since then, he has kept his love life private.
