Inside Bruno Guimaraes' unveiling: Message to Arsenal, Xavi and Iniesta, Champions League aim

Bruno Guimaraes isn't the most famous Brazil star to take the hotseat in the St James' Park media auditorium - that honour actually goes to Pele after a visit to Tyneside in 2003.

But one thing was clear as we edged towards the conclusion of the 24-year-old's media presentation in the bowels of this famous old stadium, that Bruno is here to emblazon his name across the Premier League stage.

When asked which players he styled himself on, he casually name-dropped Spanish stars Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

During a 22 minute stint in front of the cameras and written media, Bruno put in an impressive performance as he opened up by apologising for not mastering English yet!

Then he gave fans the words they will want to hear from somebody they pray will be their main man when he said:

  • He "definitely" feels Newcastle will beat the drop
  • He wants to win the Champions League one day with the Magpies
  • Why he feels Newcastle can be as big or bigger than Arsenal, the team who missed out on signing him
  • How former Toon defender Cacapa helped sway his decision
  • Why he hopes his heart with beat to the rhythm of Gallowgate End who will soon be chanting his name

Although, despite the presence of a translator to help him along, the defensive midfield ace was quick to demonstrate he was receptive to what was being said in the room around him.

In short, the former Athletico Paranaense and Lyon star is dialled in.

As he neatly avoided the cameramen and TV crews that swarmed around him on the hallowed turf, it felt like this guy had eyes in the back of his head too.

We've already witnessed a big moment in the club's history via a video clip of Bruno meeting his new team-mates with the midfielder seemingly bringing an aura with him inside his new locker room.

Looking from afar, I only expect his influence to get greater as the days tick by.

The big question has to be for United fans is: Have the cavalry arrived too late to save the relegation-haunted Magpies?

It was a topic Bruno was quick to address the hot topic of avoiding relegation and said: "They (the owners) were very up front and honest about it.

"They didn’t disguise that the main objective and challenge was remaining in the Premier League this season.

"But in the seasons coming, the objective is to be in the Champions League and eventually to win the Champions League."

Bruno then revealed how he'd spoken to Brazil stars such as Thiago Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles to ask them about playing at St James' Park.

He said: “They told me how difficult it is to play away at Newcastle given how passionate the fans are, that it’s one of the most difficult away fixtures in the league, so I didn’t have to think twice about coming here."

So what type of player can Newcastle fans really expect.

Bruno answered: "In terms of Brazilian players I’m quite similar to, it’s difficult.

"I’d say two Spanish players I’ve always been inspired by, Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

"In terms of Brazilian players that I have always been a huge fan of, it’s Ronaldinho – but we’re very different players."

The short-term vision is clear for Newcastle with eight wins needed from the last 17 games.

But beyond this season, should they survive, Bruno felt Newcastle can be bigger than Arsenal, bigger than them all.

He boldly said: "We are definitely going to be a club that is going to be a big power in world football.

"This is a historic club with a great tradition and a beautiful history, I have no doubts about my decision to come to Newcastle."

For a club that was quibbling over loan fees for players just 12 months ago, talk of the Champions League still seems dreamlike.

Yet given the funds that Newcastle have at their disposal, blowing Arsenal and Juventus out of the water to sign Bruno, one day it could be a reality.

United need to stay up first but more arrivals like Bruno in the next year or two may broaden horizons on Barrack Road and getting their hands on the big prizes will be achievable, even the great Pele won't argue with that!
