The news today that Boris Johnson has resigned as leader of the Conservative party, after 59 MPs stepped down from the government, marks the latest chapter in the PM's turbulent career.

He set out his plans to the country today, and a new Tory leader is expected to be in place by autumn.

The Prime Minister thanked his wife, family and the civil service in his speech.
