Inside Ayrshire Hospice's brand new £13 million home as fundraising campaign begins ahead of construction

Diggers are to move in at The Ayrshire Hospice this summer as part of the charity's ambitious redevelopment.

A £13 million rebuild will take place at their Racecourse Road home in Ayr in a bid to "future proof" the organisation for generations.

Services are currently being switched ahead of the construction with the Hospice to base their inpatient unit out of Cumnock's East Ayrshire Community Hospital.

Community Services will have an administrative base at Ailsa Hospital's Lochranza Ward.

It is hoped the full transfer of operations will be complete within the next month.

Almost £7 million of funding for the ambitious capital build project has already been secured.

Now the Hospice has officially launched a fundraising campaign to help raise the remaining £6.3 million of cash required.

Bosses achieved a national first by sending a time capsule containing a historic first staff photograph to the edge of space.

The pioneering mission will see Ayrshire’s largest charity soar over 50 miles (264,000 feet) above the Earth.

Dr Suzie Imber, Associate Professor of Planetary Science at the University of Leicester and supporter of the Hospice, said: “Using near space missions to educate and inspire people to support this fabulous charity is such a different approach to fundraising and raising awareness.

"We want a Hospice that everyone can be proud of and we can’t do this without others’ help."

Northern Irish firm McLaughlin & Harvey have been appointed as preferred contractors for the rebuild, which is expected to see the new look Hospice re-open in Autumn 2023.

Hospice CEO, Carla MacEwan, added: "This appointment marks the next phase in our Capital Project.

"McLaughlin & Harvey has a wealth of experience in delivering healthcare projects and it’s hugely exciting to be welcoming them to the Project Build Team, led by Turner & Townsend, to realise our vision for Ayrshire Hospice."

The new Hospice has been designed by architectural practice Austin Smith Lord.
