Inside abandoned Irish home with 90th birthday cards and Nissan Micra left to rot

An abandoned house in Cork has provided explorers and followers alike with a look into the past.

The property acts as a time capsule into what was once a much-loved home in Co Cork.

It appears as though the home, referred to as Mrs Ahern’s House, was left in 2003 and has been since forgotten.

The home was discovered by the Instagram page, Abandoned Ireland, who shared images of overgrown trees, broken windows, belongings and even an old car.

The wildlife surrounding the home is said to have made it nearly invisible from the road, after it was left in 2003 with no evidence of anyone having ever returned.

The explorers behind the Abandoned Ireland page even found some 90th birthday cards addressed to the former homeowner. They said: “Seemingly abandoned around 2003, this house has now been entirely forgotten. It’s invisible from the road and completely overgrown.

“Birthday cards scattered around what would have kitchen area tells us this home belonged to Mrs Ahern.”

In the garden sits Mrs Ahern’s little Nissan Micra, which would have been nearly brand new when the house was left vacant, Cork Beo reports. Photos show mould growing on the inside, as well as cobwebs covering the dash and even some plants making their way in.

“Her nearly brand new car was left to the elements and her home left to fall apart,” the post on Abandoned Ireland’s page said.

Many followers commented on the find, with some hoping the woman had a pleasant life. One Instagram user said: “I hope her end wasn’t as sad as the house.”

“Really sad. Guess at that age, she might have had no family left, especially as no one took her car or belongings,” another wrote.

A third said: “Wow. This really tells a story.”

Mrs Ahern’s derelict home wasn’t the only home the explorers found while on the site. The Instagram post finished: “While exploring this house, we found two others hidden next door and behind. These were completely inaccessible and overgrown."
