Innocent man sat in jail for 20 years as key witness statement gathered dust
For two decades John Kamara seethed from behind bars against a system that had wrongfully locked him up for a brutal murder he did not commit.
John had been jailed for life alongside co-accused Ray Gilbert for the savage 1981 slaying of betting shop manager John Suffield, 23, who was stabbed 19 times in a botched robbery. Mr Gilbert served 36 years in prison before being released on licence, but also maintains his innocence.
Unbeknownst to John, for the entirety of those lost years, a witness statement was gathering dust in a storeroom which undermined the key evidence that helped to put him in prison.
Mr Suffield was killed a short time after 9.30am on Friday, March 13, after opening the Joe Coral's bookies on Lodge Lane, Toxteth. His hands had been tied and he was beaten by his assailants, who made off with less than £200 in cash.
Police at the time believed Mr Suffield had inadvertently angered his attackers because his stammer meant he could not respond to their demands for a code to a time-locked inner safe. After just a matter of days, Merseyside Police arrested the two men and subjected them to intense, prolonged interrogation without the presence of solicitors.
After around 48 hours, detectives obtained what appeared to be a confession from Mr Gilbert, who tragically for John and his family falsely named him as his accomplice. Mr Gilbert later retracted his confession and says he was psychologically vulnerable at the time.

Police issue update after beach sealed off for 10 hours
Police have given an update after a Wirral beach was cordoned off for 10 hours.
HM Coastguard was seen parked up on the seafront at around 10.20am on June 2, as police officers searched the beach. Merseyside Police said they were called following reports a suspected rusted ordnance was found.
Due to the tide covering the area where the item was found, police put a cordon in place near the King's Parade roundabout to stop people from getting down onto the sand.
Access to the beach was cordoned off for the rest of the day with officers and coastguards keeping watch over the area.

Council claimed child refugee was 25 due to 'Adam's apple' and 'hairy hands'
A judge criticised Liverpool Council after it concluded a teenage asylum seeker was "at least 25" based on his "prominent Adam's apple", "coarse hair" and "hairy hands".
The boy, a 16-year-old shepherd who had only been through two years of schooling, was smuggled into the UK in a lorry after fleeing Iran, and presented himself to staff at a petrol station in Liverpool on January 25 last year. He later told Home Office staff he had been smuggling goods for the Kurdish Peshmerga at the Iranian border, but was spotted by the Iranian authorities, prompting his uncle to decide he should leave the country.
Initially the boy, who has been granted anonymity by a judge, was placed in accommodation for children provided by Active8, where he was assessed by social workers from Liverpool Council with the aid of an interpreter. They then told him they did not believe his age and he was removed to adult accommodation, where he struggled to look after himself.
