Inmates in Irish prisons have broken rules more than 21,000 times since early 2020 - an average of once every hour

Inmates have been caught breaking prison rules 21,443 times since the beginning of 2020 – an average of almost once every single hour.

Prisoners who misbehave are issued with a P19 report, which initiates a disciplinary process that can result in sanctions including a loss of privileges, such as phone calls, access to the gym, and visits to the tuck shop.

A total of 21,443 P19s were issued to inmates in the country’s 12 prisons during a two-and-a-half-year period from 2020 to the end of last June, new figures have revealed.
