Carlos Alcaraz has ruled himself out of this year’s French Open after suffering a wrist injury.
The Spaniard, the reigning champion at Roland-Garros, suffered the issue at the Barcelona Open and subsequently withdrew from the Madrid Masters in the hope that he would be fit enough to play in Paris.
However, despite taking some time off, Alcaraz has now made the decision that he will need a more extended period to recover ahead of Wimbledon, where he looks to reclaim the title he lost to Jannik Sinner last year.
"After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland-Garros as we wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to the court," Alcaraz wrote on social media.
"This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger."
The 22-year-old defeated Sinner in a French Open final for the ages on the Parisian dirt in 2025, coming through in a magnificent five-set thriller to retain his crown as the best on clay.

This year, however, he will not get the opportunity to do so, as he sits on the sidelines as a new name will be etched on the trophy.
Alcaraz, the current world No2, pulled out of Barcelona after his first-round victory over Otto Virtanen, giving Tomas Machac a walkover in the second round.
Before that, he had been bested by Sinner in straight sets in the Monte Carlo Masters and stunned in the third round of the Miami Open by home favourite Sebastian Korda to round off his American hard-court swing following a semi-final loss to Daniil Medvedev oss to Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells.
