Inflation-busting pay rise for food firm's staff as wages increase by £1,800 a year

A long-standing East Yorkshire business has announced a new, monthly additional cost of living increase for each of its 50 employees - equating to £1,800 a year.

Luxury hamper and fine food specialist Cartwright & Butler , a fifth generation firm that started life as a Hull bakery, is giving staff a permanent boost “over and above the annual pay increase”.

The ‘cost of living’ pay rise is in response to the well-publicised pressures on home finances due to rising inflation and soaring energy bills. It comes in the week when regional law firm Wilkin Chapman announced a £1,000 payment for more than 350 staff.

Tony Arnett, managing director of the firm, now based in Gilberdyke, said: “Our employees are the best asset that Cartwright & Butler has. Without their passion and enthusiasm, the business wouldn’t be where it is today.

“Like everyone we have seen the increase in fuel and energy prices and recognise the pressure this places on our colleagues and wanted to do something to help.

“We hope this regular monthly payment can take some of the pressure off the families of absolutely everyone that works for us.”

As part of its commitment to ‘doing the right thing’ the company has also committed as part of its carbon neutral journey, to offset the impact that its colleagues have on the environment, both at home and in the workplace.

Partnering with Ecologi, 760 trees a month will now be planted, the equivalent of cutting out 52 tonnes of CO2 a month.

It has also joined forces with social impact company and anti-food waste app Too Good To Go as part of its ongoing sustainability drive, bringing surplus stock to consumers at knock-down prices.
