Infantino lays out proposed Fifa reforms as he doubles down on standing for re-election

  • Fifa president Gianni Infantino has written to all 211 member associations proposing governance reforms following intense pressure to resign over a scrapped plan to sell a 20 per cent stake in Fifa tournaments to private investors.
  • Despite calls for his resignation led by Uefa alongside opposition from the Asian confederation and Concacaf, Infantino insisted he remains fully committed to leading world football's governing body and intends to stand for re-election.
  • Infantino suggested asking the Fifa Council to commission an independent external review of its governance framework for major strategic initiatives to enhance transparency, participation, and accountability.
  • The proposed reforms include establishing a direct, time-limited consultation with confederations and member associations to strengthen decision-making processes across Fifa's executive bodies.
  • The announcement follows demands from Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt for an independent review into both the private investment plan and Fifa's handling of US striker Folarin Balogun's suspended ban after intervention from Donald Trump.
