Indy Man Beer festival releases more weekend tickets as well as new beer with legendary Manchester brewery

The Indy Man Beer Convention has released more weekend tickets ahead of the beer festival’s long-awaited return to the city. The event has had two years off in the wake of the pandemic, but will be back at Victoria Baths from September 29 to October 2.

Tickets for both the Friday and Saturday sessions had sold out weeks ago, but now a new raft of tickets for both have been unleashed, starting at £15. There are also still limited ‘full fat’ tickets available too, for £80, which gets you into the festival for the entire duration.

Festival organisers have also announced a collaboration beer with JW Lees, the iconic, 200-year-old brewery based in Middleton. Called Hops Are Green, it’s hoping to send a message as well as being a great pint.

The beer, an Extra Special Bitter, has been brewed with an eye towards lowering the carbon footprint in the beer industry, so it uses British ‘green’ or freshly harvested wet hops which require less energy to process. The hops are grown in the UK by Brook House, a hop farm in Herefordshire, rather than being flown in from the likes of New Zealand and the US.

“We are experienced in adapting as the world changes around us. In order to stay relevant and to keep pouring beer for the next 200 years we need to remain curious and to experiment with different ideas,” said head brewer Michael Lees-Jones. “We think it is great that the IMBC team are asking questions about sustainability in beer as we consider how we can be a more sustainable brewery.”

Added Indy Man’s head of beer Matt Gorecki: “We all love American Hops and we have for years, but we can’t ignore what people like Brookhouse are doing right here on the doorstep. They’re growing some mega stuff!

“When we first spoke to JW Lees and heard Michael’s story about working with the same farmers and fields as his grandfather we just felt that we could bring together the best of both worlds.” The bitter will be available at the festival, at selected JW Lees pubs and at the Port Street Beer House in the Northern Quarter.

Turning up with their wares this year will be locals like Squawk, Red Willow, Track, Pomona Island, Cloudwater and Sureshot, alongside the likes of Verdant, Deya, The Kernal, Floc and Wild Card.

And as well as welcoming hundreds of breweries from the UK and around the world, the convention will also feature great food and entertainment at the listed swimming baths. The likes of Bundobust, Honest Crust, Wholesome Junkies and Dim Sum Su will be there over the weekend, helping soak up the IPAs and lagers.
