Indonesia volcano eruption forces major airport to cancel all flights

  • Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano erupted early on Sunday morning, spewing lava flares and sending massive ash clouds reaching up to 50,000 feet into the atmosphere across western Indonesia.
  • The eruption forced Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to cancel all flights, leading to widespread travel disruption that affected 209 flight movements and nearly 22,800 passengers.
  • No casualties or evacuations were reported as the nearest settlement is over 16 kilometres away, but officials warned the public to stay at least 3 kilometres clear of the active crater.
  • Disaster management officials confirmed there was no immediate tsunami risk, though drifting volcanic ash prompted health warnings to wear masks and forced the cancellation of local school activities and fishing trips.
  • Anak Krakatau, situated in the Sunda Strait on the Pacific Ring of Fire, has maintained a high alert status since a 2018 flank collapse triggered a devastating tsunami that killed more than 430 people.
