IndiGo Faces Backlash Over Alleged Grooming Policy Amid Religious Symbols Debate

The controversy began when a user on X (formerly Twitter) shared screenshots of what were claimed to be the airline’s internal grooming manuals titled “Male Poise” and “Female Poise.” These documents allegedly suggested restrictions on visible religious symbols such as tilak, sindoor, mangalsutra, and kalawa. At the same time, some users claimed that other religious identifiers might still be permitted, intensifying the debate and raising questions about consistency.

Public reaction was swift and sharply divided.

A section of users called for a boycott of the airline, while others issued warnings about the potential reputational risks of such policies in a highly competitive aviation market. One widely shared post even drew comparisons to the decline of Jet Airways, suggesting that brands ignoring public sentiment could face serious consequences. Meanwhile, many individuals expressed anger and demanded an immediate rollback of the alleged rules.

Others took a more measured approach, arguing that the recurring nature of such controversies points to the need for clearer and more uniform corporate guidelines around religious expression. According to this view, a standardized framework could help companies avoid repeated backlash and confusion.

This incident comes close on the heels of a similar controversy involving Lenskart earlier this month. The eyewear brand faced criticism after an internal style guide reportedly allowed certain religious attire such as hijabs and turbans while discouraging items like bindis and tilaks. The backlash included online criticism, boycott calls, and protests in several cities. In response, CEO Peyush Bansal clarified that the document was outdated, issued an apology, and confirmed that the company had updated its policies to permit all religious symbols.

With IndiGo now under scrutiny, the broader issue has once again come into focus: how should companies strike a balance between maintaining uniform workplace policies and respecting employees’ personal and religious beliefs?

Addressing the controversy, IndiGo released an official statement dismissing the circulating documents as inaccurate. The airline stated that the materials being shared online were “incorrect” and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information. It further emphasized that its policies are aligned with global best practices and are designed primarily to ensure operational safety and the wellbeing of both crew and passengers. The company also reiterated its commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace.

The situation highlights a growing reality for modern brands—public accountability is immediate, amplified, and often unforgiving. As discussions around identity and inclusivity continue to evolve, companies are finding themselves under increasing pressure to navigate these issues thoughtfully and transparently.
