Indianapolis police reported that a man was fatally shot after he fired shots during a standoff with a SWAT team. The incident occurred on the city's west side around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday night.
The man, identified as Luis Duran-Ruano, 31, by the Marion County Coroner's Office, was taken to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call about a man firing shots into the air. When officers attempted to stop the man from driving away, he led them on a brief pursuit that ended outside a home.
Upon exiting the car armed with a gun, which he held to his head, a SWAT team was called to the scene. A sergeant engaged in communication with the man in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and get him to surrender the weapon. However, after about an hour, the man started walking away from the home.
SWAT team officers then fired bean bag rounds, prompting the suspect to fire gunshots. In response, three officers discharged their firearms, fatally wounding the man. A gun was recovered at the scene.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced that the shooting will be thoroughly investigated by an IMPD Critical Incident Response Team and internal affairs. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
