Indianapolis Colts release DE from practice squad to make room for OL addition

The Indianapolis Colts made a pair of practice squad moves on Tuesday.

The team announced that they have signed offensive tackle Mason Brooks, and the corresponding move in order to make room for him was releasing defensive end Derek Rivers.

Throughout the season, the Colts have regularly churned the back end of their practice squad.

Rivers is a former third-round pick by New England in 2017, playing 336 career defensive snaps and 119 on special teams. He joined the Colts’ roster during the latter half of training camp when the team was in need of defensive end depth.

Rivers last regular season snaps came during the 2021 regular season while with the Houston Texans. According to PFF, he has recorded 14 pressures and four sacks in his 210 career pass rush snaps, along with 27 total tackles, five of which were for a loss.

Rivers would play 34 defensive snaps in the Colts final two preseason games this past summer. He was then released during roster cutdowns, but was brought back to the practice squad on September 24th, where he remained until Tuesday.

Of note with the addition of Brooks at the tackle position, Bernhard Raimann exited Sunday’s game with a knee injury. As of now, we don’t have any additional information about Raimann’s availability this week.

Although Brooks isn’t going to be expected to play by any means, his addition does provide depth in practice at the position if needed.
