Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has outlined plans to expand capacity on seven of India’s busiest railway routes by developing them into four-line corridors.
The high-density routes span nearly 11,000 km and currently handle around 41 per cent of the country’s total railway traffic, despite accounting for only about 16 per cent of the overall railway network.
The expansion is aimed at meeting the rising demand for passenger and freight movement while strengthening the capacity of some of the country’s most heavily used rail corridors.
