An Indian Navy sailor, his wife and their two young children were found dead at their residential quarters in Navy Nagar in Colaba, south Mumbai, on Saturday, Independence Day, police said on Sunday.
According to the Cuffe Parade police, the sailor was found hanging at the residence on Saturday night, while the bodies of his wife and two children, aged two months and three years, were also found on the premises, news agency PTI reported.
Local police and naval security personnel were alerted after the family reportedly failed to respond to calls, ANI reported.
Prima facie, police suspect that the sailor died by suicide, while his wife and children may have been poisoned, an official said, according to PTI. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police have secured the site for forensic examination and launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities are investigating all possible angles, with further details awaited pending the autopsy reports, ANI reported.
The Indian Navy confirmed the deaths and said it was extending all possible assistance to the police in the investigation.
"In an unfortunate incident at Navy Nagar, Colaba, an Indian Navy sailor along with his wife and 2 children have been found dead at their residence on 15 Aug 26. Investigation is in progress by the Police and the Indian Navy is extending all possible assistance towards the same," the Navy said in a statement, as reported by ANI.
The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed so far. The investigation is underway.
