NEW DELHI: Airlines including Air India, IndiGo and Vistara have started cancelling flights to Dhaka. The airport in Bangladesh capital city was closed after 5 pm for some hours on Monday amid worsening unrest there. An IndiGo flight from Dhaka to Kolkata (6E 1106) was able to leave around 5 pm.
Air India said on Monday evening: “In view of the emerging situation in Bangladesh, we have cancelled the scheduled operation of our flights to and from Dhaka with immediate effect. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are extending support to our passengers with confirmed bookings for travel to and from Dhaka with a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation charges. Safety of our guests and crew remains our foremost priority.”
IndiGo said: “In view of the ongoing situation in Dhaka, all flights scheduled for (Aug 6) have unfortunately been cancelled. We understand that this may cause significant inconvenience and disruption to your travel plans and we sincerely regret this development.”
Vistara has cancelled Tuesday flights to Dhaka from both Delhi and Mumbai.
Air India Express had recently announced it will have six times weekly flights between Kolkata & Chennai and Dhaka from early next month. Now whether that happens remains to be seen.
