Indian film star Allu Arjun has been arrested following a fatal crowd crush at a cinema screening that left one woman dead and her son seriously injured.
The 42-year-old actor was detained on three charges including "voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means", police confirmed. Seven others were also arrested in connection with the incident.
The tragedy occurred on December 4 when crowds surged to catch a glimpse of Arjun at a screening of his new film Pushpa 2: The Rule in Hyderabad.
Footage shared by TV9 showed the actor speaking to officers at his home while holding a coffee mug during the arrest.
The victim's family filed a complaint against Arjun, his security team and venue management following the death of the woman, who was in her 30s, India Today reported.
Two days after the incident, Arjun expressed his remorse on social media. He said: "I am deeply heartbroken. While respecting their need for space to grieve, I stand committed to extend every possible assistance to help them navigate through this challenging journey."
Arjun, who recently won best actor at India's National Film Awards for the first Pushpa film in 2021, is one of southern India's biggest stars. The franchise has been a major box office success in the region.
