India vs England Playing 11: Predicted XI, team news and key changes for 1st ODI

India will aim to bounce back from a 0-4 T20I series defeat when they face England in the opening match of the three-match ODI series at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday.

The visitors struggled to adapt to English conditions during the T20I series, with England's pace attack repeatedly troubling India's young batting lineup with short-pitched bowling. The ODI series, however, marks the return of several experienced players, giving Shubman Gill's side a stronger-looking unit for the 50-over format.

India's bowling attack also receives a major boost with Jasprit Bumrah returning for his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup final defeat to Australia.

ENG vs IND 1st ODI: India bank on experienced stars

India welcome back Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, all of whom were rested for the T20I leg of the tour. Shubman Gill will continue to lead the ODI side, while KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer strengthen a top order that has consistently performed in one-day cricket.

The bowling unit will be under scrutiny after the disappointing T20I campaign. Bumrah's return strengthens the pace attack, while Arshdeep Singh and left-arm seamer Gurnoor Brar are expected to make use of English conditions. Shivam Dube is likely to provide the fourth pace option in the absence of injured all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

India also face a selection decision in the spin department. Kuldeep Yadav remains the team's leading wicket-taking spinner, while Axar Patel offers additional batting depth and greater control during the middle overs.

ENG vs IND 1st ODI: England retain winning combination

England have retained the core of the side that swept the T20I series, with Harry Brook continuing as captain and Joe Root returning to strengthen the batting lineup.

The hosts have named Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett as their opening pair, while Jos Buttler will keep wickets in his 200th ODI appearance.

Brook and Buttler will look to carry their T20I form into the ODI series, while Bethell's promotion provides England with another aggressive left-handed option at the top of the order.

England's bowling attack features Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue as the frontline fast bowlers, with Sam Curran adding seam support. Will Jacks, Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid complete the spin options, giving Brook multiple bowling combinations and added batting depth.

Although England have not played an ODI since touring Sri Lanka in January, their recent 4-0 T20I series victory and familiarity with home conditions make them slight favourites heading into the series opener.
