India vs England LIVE: T20 World Cup semi-final result, latest updates and reaction

Key moment: India celebrate after Jacob Bethell is run out in the final over of England’s chase - (REUTERS)

India vs England LIVE!

India will face New Zealand in the 2026 T20 World Cup final on Sunday after edging past England by seven runs in a last-four thriller in Mumbai. The defending champions and co-hosts looked on course to ease into a second successive showpiece after Sanju Samson picked up where he left off in a pivotal Super 8 victory against the West Indies, profiting from an early Harry Brook drop as he hit 89 to help India post a massive score of 253 after they had been put in to bat.

It was a very disappointing showing from England’s bowlers and in the field, but they almost pulled off the most extraordinary comeback thanks to Jacob Bethell, who struck a remarkable 105 in just 48 deliveries, ably assisted by the likes of Will Jacks and Sam Curran. However, Bethell was run out in the final over as spirited England fell just shy with their total of 246-7.

It is the Black Caps who await India in this weekend’s final in Ahmedabad after Finn Allen’s incredible, record-breaking 33-ball century powered them to a nine-wicket demolition of South Africa in Kolkata on Wednesday. Follow India vs England live below!

India vs England highlights

  • England fall just short after rapid Bethell century
  • India set England mammoth target of 254
  • Samson stars for India after crucial Brook drop
  • England win toss and bowl first as Overton comes in
  • New Zealand await in final after Allen heroics

England fall just short despite Jacob Bethell heroics

17:38 , George Flood

You certainly can’t fault England’s chasing efforts there - to only fall seven runs short after being set a mammoth target of 254 by India in Mumbai in a World Cup semi-final is no mean feat - that was far closer in the end than anyone would have envisaged.

Bethell’s incredible 105 from 48 balls further underlines what a special, special talent he is and almost had them in reach of an all-time great comeback, assisted well by Will Jacks.

A spirited end to a strong tournament for England, but ultimately they just had a bit too much to do after a poor performance with the ball and in the field.

Overs 20: England 246-7 (Archer 19, Overton 2) - India win by seven runs

17:22 , George Flood

Overton can only manage a single before Archer cannons an initial six down the ground.

Too late though for England, who need 21 off Dube’s final pair of deliveries.

He bowls a wide before Archer crashes another six to make it 14 needed off the final ball.

It’s another six from Archer, but India end up securing victory by seven runs.

WICKET! Jacob Bethell (104) run out - England 225-7

17:17 , George Flood

Agonising for Bethell as he fires down the ground and knows he has to get two to get back on strike.

But Hardik is far too fast in the field and swiftly delivers the ball back for wicket-keeper Samson, who does the rest.

That is England’s hopes over now for sure, but what an innings from Bethell.

Jofra Archer comes in.

Overs 19: England 224-6 (Bethell 104, Overton 1)

17:13 , George Flood

A quick Overton single gets Bethell back on strike, but Bethell can only manage a single of his own as he’s contained by Hardik, who finishes by having Overton swiping at air to a wider delivery.

Shivam Dube will bowl the final over for India.

England need 30 off it.

WICKET! Sam Curran (18) c Tilak, b Hardik - England 222-6

17:11 , George Flood

Truly magnificent from Bethell, whose latest big shot off Hardik bounces over for six off the hand of a despairing Axar.

His first T20 ton - in a semi-final chase and off just 45 balls, no less. Brilliant.

Curran tries to match it but he’s picked out Tilak on the boundary, with the latter’s foot just avoiding the cushion on the rope.

39 from nine needed now as Jamie Overton joins Bethell in the middle.

Overs 18: England 215-5 (Bethell 96, Curran 18)

17:07 , George Flood

Bethell with a single and Curran adds two more after a well-timed dot ball from Bumrah, who is into his final over.

95 off 43 now for Bethell.

Curran guides away a full toss for another single.

Bethell whips away a yorker off his legs to end the over.

Just six given up by Bumrah, who is now done.

Hardik Pandya will bowl the 19th over for India...

Overs 17: England 209-5 (Bethell 94, Curran 14)

17:03 , George Flood

Arshdeep adds to his growing collection of wides to begin the 17th over.

Finally some movement off a flat pitch has Bethell scrambling, with just a single on offer for him in this tense over so far.

Curran opens up and slashes away towards the boundary, where there is a fielder as England take two.

Hardik with some alert fielding then limits Curran to a single.

Arshdeep with another wide, with Bethell then breaking the resistance as he clubs down the ground for a much-needed six to make it 90 off 41 for him.

He then reaches and manages to just slice away another wider delivery for four.

Sublime from Bethell and England need 45 off 18 now.

Overs 16: England 193-5 (Bethell 83, Curran 11)

16:55 , George Flood

That’s a fine strike from Curran to dispatch Bumrah away for four, but the superstar quick responds with a delicious delivery that trickles back to him.

England want two off the next ball but Curran puts up a hand to wisely stop Bethell in his tracks.

Bethell back on strike and he claws away a wider delivery through the off side for a single.

61 needed off 24 balls.

Overs 15: England 185-5 (Bethell 81, Curran 5)

16:51 , George Flood

Bethell with a couple off Varun to stay on strike, followed by another wonderfully-struck four by Bethell, who moves on to 80 and has been joined in the middle by Sam Curran after the loss of Jacks.

A wide there from Varun and a quick Bethell single puts Curran on strike for the first time.

A dot is followed by Curran whacking away through the leg side for four.

Another single to end the over from Curran. Bumrah coming back into the India attack now.

WICKET! Will Jacks (35) c Axar, b Arshdeep - England 172-5

16:43 , George Flood

Arshdeep is back into the India attack and is instantly slapped away for four by Bethell, who lofts a wider delivery into space for another couple.

Arshdeep then sees Bethell moving wide of leg stump and smartly bowls a dot outside off.

Bethell with another couple, then a single from a mishit little loft.

Arshdeep bowls a mile wide of off stump to Jacks... and another! The second looked harsh.

A third straight wide from Arshdeep, who responds with a fuller delivery that is cracked away deep into the off side by Jacks... and it’s another brilliant catch by Axar, his third of the day.

A crucial wicket for India. They needed to break up this partnership.

Overs 13: England 160-4 (Bethell 65, Jacks 35)

16:35 , George Flood

Jacks rockets another monster six over the leg side and high into the stands off Axar.

India captain Suryakumar then with a poor misfield as the ball goes through his legs and away for another Jacks four.

Bethell chops another one away for a couple, following with a single.

15 off the over. This is some showing from Bethell and Jacks to give England hope.

94 needed off 42 balls.

Overs 12: England 145-4 (Bethell 61, Jacks 24)

16:32 , George Flood

Jacks knocks a single off Varun before Bethell’s brilliant reverse scoop for four.

A couple of singles follow as Bethell moves into the 60s, gently nudging away into the gap for another.

Jacks opens up with a huge hit that carries for six.

50-partnership up off 29 balls. Varun is proving so, so expensive for India here.

Overs 11: England 131-4 (Bethell 55, Jacks 16)

16:26 , George Flood

Too high from Bumrah to Jacks and a wide is signalled.

Jacks then confidently slams away a yorker for four through the off side.

He doesn’t connect nearly as well with the next shot, but Bumrah can’t stop it and there is still a single taken.

Bethell does well to guide away another yorker to get a couple and his half-century off just 19 balls - the joint-fastest of this tournament.

Unconventional struggles for Bumrah as a dot is followed by Bethell pulling away past square leg for four.

No run off the final delivery as Bumrah bowls another yorker.

Overs 10: England 119-4 (Bethell 49, Jacks 11)

16:21 , George Flood

Just a single for Jacks after he doesn’t quite middle a wider delivery from Axar, who started his latest over with a dot.

A wide follows, before Bethell goes for a quick single and narrowly avoids being run out after Hardik had fired the ball quickly back to Axar, a little too hard.

Two leg byes for England as Suryakumar opts not to review after an lbw shout against Jacks.

Bottom of the bat straight down the ground and Jacks has another single.

Strong over from Axar. Bumrah is about to return...

Overs 9: England 113-4 (Bethell 48, Jacks 9)

16:17 , George Flood

This is superb batting from Bethell, who has England into three figures with one smoked four and follows it up immediately with another.

A quick single puts Jacks back on strike and he’s almost bowled attempting a slog sweep.

He responds by blasting away ruthlessly for four, then finishing with a single.

Another very expensive over from Varun.

All spin for India as Axar continues.

Overs 8: England 99-4 (Bethell 39, Jacks 4)

16:13 , George Flood

Jacks drills away for four to quickly get off and running.

Varun bowling next for India.

WICKET! Tom Banton (17) b Axar - England 95-4

16:11 , George Flood

Axar Patel into the India attack now and he’s smashed for consecutive huge sixes by Banton.

But rather like Varun earlier, he holds his nerve to bowl him next ball!

Will Jacks is the next man up.

Overs 7: England 83-3 (Bethell 39, Banton 5)

16:08 , George Flood

Bethell is not wasting any time here as he hits Hardik for six after a couple of singles and a wide.

It’s exactly what England need and Bethell now hits Hardik for four.

Two off the final ball of an expensive over for India.

England are ahead of where India were at this stage of their innings...

Overs 6: England 68-3 (Bethell 26, Banton 4)

16:03 , George Flood

Banton, in at number five for England, powers away for four with his first shot of the innings.

The required run rate stands at 11.33 after the powerplay.

WICKET! Jos Buttler (25) b Varun - England 64-3

15:59 , George Flood

India introduce spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who is quickly smashed for consecutive big sixes by Bethell.

Make it three in a row with the emphatic reverse sweep - wow!

Bethell then drives for a single to put Buttler back on strike.

Buttler tries to follow suit with his own big shot but gets it all wrong and is clean bowled.

Relief for Varun!

Overs 5: England 45-2 (Bethell 7, Buttler 25)

15:55 , George Flood

Bethell with an early statement of intent as he stands up to Bumrah with a first-ball six.

Bumrah responds with back-to-back dot balls, Bethell swinging and missing the second.

They manage a single off the last delivery, but it’s a strong start from India’s star paceman.

WICKET! Harry Brook (7) c Axar, b Bumrah - England 38-2

15:51 , George Flood

Bumrah gets England’s captain and best batter with his first ball!

A slower delivery is mishit with one hand in the end by Brook, with Axar sprinting some 20 yards to take a brilliant, athletic catch.

England’s formidable task here just got much, much harder.

Jacob Bethell is in at number four.

Overs 4: England 38-1 (Brook 7, Buttler 25)

15:49 , George Flood

Some sharp fielding from India limits Buttler to a single when he wanted two.

Brook gets his second single before a shorter delivery from Hardik is knocked through for four by Brook, who nicks a single after a dot ball.

Buttler is finally getting into the groove here as he blasts for six to end the over.

Jasprit Bumrah will bowl for India next.

Overs 3: England 25-1 (Brook 1, Buttler 18)

15:43 , George Flood

Buttler with a textbook drive off Arshdeep down the ground for four.

He swings and misses badly again before smartly lifting into space just short of the boundary, taking a couple.

He finishes the over with another fine strike down the pitch for four.

10 off it.

Overs 2: England 15-1 (Brook 1, Buttler 8)

15:40 , George Flood

Brook is off the mark with a quick single and Hardik almost coaxes the inside edge from Buttler with a wicked delivery that he celebrates despite not getting the dismissal.

He follows with another dot ball before a wild swing and a miss from Buttler, who is then hit by the ball as he tries to manoeuver himself to a wider delivery.

One extra. Great first over from Hardik.

WICKET! Phil Salt (5) c Axar, b Hardik - England 13-1

15:35 , George Flood

Disaster for England now as Salt falls off Hardik’s first ball, deceived by the movement as an undercooked shot sails straight into the waiting hands of Axar.

That brings Harry Brook to the middle.

Overs 1: England 13-0 (Salt 5, Buttler 8)

15:33 , George Flood

An encouraging start at least for England with a four from each opener either side of a Salt single.

A rather more unconventional four follows from Buttler, who reacts with a chuckle.

13 off the first over.

England run chase begins

15:29 , George Flood

Phil Salt and Jos Buttler are out in the middle as England’s formidable run chase begins.

Arshdeep Singh is bowling first for India.

India wreak havoc as England's bowlers toil

15:28 , George Flood

Sanju Samson was the star of the show again for India with 89 from 42, but there were some strong contributions throughout their deep batting lineup from the likes of Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma.

England started badly during the powerplay and never recovered, with struggles with the ball and in the field - the early Harry Brook drop off Samson was an absolute dolly.

Archer was 1-61, Overton 0-36, Curran 0-53.

254 needed for the most unlikely, record-breaking victory.

India with one foot firmly planted in Sunday’s final.

Overs 20: India 253-7 (Varun 0, Axar 2)

15:18 , George Flood

A couple of last-gasp extras for India sees them finish their innings on 253-7.

To say that England face a truly daunting task with their chase would be putting it mildly.

Surely an insurmountable total after a punishing day for their bowling attack.

WICKET! Hardik Pandya (27) run out - India 251-7

15:15 , George Flood

Axar with another single puts Hardik on strike and he lofts an enormous six.

A dot is followed by another huge Hardik six that takes India to 250!

Hardik then rather needlessly calls for a very risky two and is very clearly run out as Bethell fires into Buttler, who does the rest.

Varun Chakravarthy will come out and face the final ball of the innings.

Overs 19: India 237-6 (Hardik 14, Axar 1)

15:11 , George Flood

Another yorker to finish from Archer, Axar nudges it away for a single.

England opt for Jacks over Overton in the final over.

WICKET! Tilak Varma (21) b Archer - India 236-6

15:10 , George Flood

Archer’s final over starts with a massive six from Tilak - Archer is now 0-47 on a punishing day.

Tilak swings wildly at the second ball but misses it completely, then moves across the wicket to slice a quick delivery away for another six.

Make that three sixes off the over for Tilak! Archer is being smashed all over the place.

He now bowls a wide for good measure, but does restore some pride with a yorker that cannons into the stumps off an inside edge from Tilak.

Axar Patel to the middle.

Overs 18: India 217-5 (Hardik 14, Tilak 3)

15:04 , George Flood

Another missed chance for England as another slower ball from Curran isn’t hit well by Hardik, but Tom Banton can’t bring it in on the dive.

India add three more runs to the tally but narrowly avoid another frantic run out.

Tilak may have hurt his hamstring here and will need treatment.

We are back underway after a brief delay, with Curran bowling another wide.

Hardik adds another single to end the over.

Two to go.

WICKET! Shivam Dube (43) run out by Brook - England 212-5

14:59 , George Flood

India have absolutely feasted off the slower balls from England today, including that latest eye-catching six from Dube off Curran.

Curran thinks he’s got Dube lbw and Brook immediately goes upstairs.

Not out on the field and it was missing the stumps, so the review is lost and it’s a leg bye.

But Dube quickly falls straight after a mix-up with Hardik sees him run out by a cracking throw from Brook.

Tilak Varma is the next man up for India.

Overs 17: India 205-4 (Hardik 13, Dube 37)

14:55 , George Flood

That’s the most nonchalant boundary you are ever likely to see from Hardik off Overton, flicked away for four with just the slightest movement of the bat.

The singles keep on flowing, helped by another fumble in the field, this time by Curran.

Hardik drives away for another superb four to take India past 200, with Overton’s frustration quite clear.

Hardik with a well-placed shot to finish the over with another four.

WICKET! Suryakumar Yadav (11) st Buttler, b Rashid - India 190-4

14:50 , George Flood

Rashid comes in for his final over and is blazed over long-off by Dube for six.

India then think about a risky two but quickly decide against it.

Suryakumar sweeps away for his first six, the man on the boundary isn’t stopping that.

He tries another off a googly from Rashid but misses it completely and is all at sea out of his crease as Buttler reacts brilliantly with the stumping.

Now comes Hardik Pandya as India close in on 200.

Overs 15: India 177-3 (Suryakumar 5, Dube 28)

14:45 , George Flood

England’s fielding has been generally impressive in this tournament so far but that’s a couple of fumbles in the deep now to go with Brook’s crucial early drop of Samson - very rare to see it from Jacob Bethell.

Three runs off the first two balls of Curran’s latest over, with sharper fielding then limiting Suryakumar to another single only.

Another wide to follow a dot, with a slower ball crashed down the pitch for four by Dube, who finishes with a single.

Overs 14: India 167-3 (Suryakumar 4, Dube 20)

14:40 , George Flood

A second wicket for Jacks brings India captain Suryakumar Yadav to the crease, joining Dube.

He immediately takes two to get off the mark before three successive singles off the spin.

Jacks bowls a wide to Dube, who ends the over with another single

WICKET! Sanju Samson (89) c Salt, b Jacks - India 160-3

14:35 , George Flood

Samson falls 11 runs short of his century as he’s coaxed into trying to smoke a wider delivery from Jacks and doesn’t hit it well at all.

Salt takes his second simple catch of the innings.

What a showing again from Samson.

Overs 13: India 160-2 (Samson 89, Dube 18)

14:32 , George Flood

Archer returns to try and break up what is already a very nice partnership indeed for India.

He starts with a couple of much-needed dot balls, before Dube strikes down the ground for a swift single.

Another slower ball from Archer is clobbered over point for six by Samson.

Now a wide from Archer, whose latest slow ball is smashed down the ground for six by Samson.

Samson goes for it again but this time there is a fielder there to stop the onslaught of boundaries.

15 from the over. England in an absolute world of trouble.

Overs 12: India 145-2 (Samson 76, Dube 17)

14:27 , George Flood

Dube joins the party with a big shot that soars 90 metres away for six off Rashid.

Successive singles follow a dot ball, with Dube then smashing a carbon copy of that first six to take him up to 13 for the tournament.

This is punishing, punishing stuff from India.

England are being blown away.

Overs 11: India 130-2 (Samson 75, Dube 3)

14:22 , George Flood

Overton is back in and is promptly dispatched for six by the superb Samson, who England cannot hope to contain here.

A trickle of singles follow to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

That’s way too high from Overton as a cheap extra follows a dot ball.

Dube ends the over with a single.

Overs 10: India 119-2 (Samson 67, Dube 1)

14:19 , George Flood

Better from Rashid now after Dube goes for broke almost immediately.

Can England wrestle back some momentum here?

WICKET! Ishan Kishan (39) c Jacks, b Rashid - India 117-2

14:16 , George Flood

Two diving fielders can’t prevent that Kishan four after another Samson single.

But he’s out next ball as he mistimes an enticing Rashid delivery and gives Jacks a straightforward catch.

Out comes Shivam Dube to join Samson.

England must build on that breakthrough.

Overs 9: India 112-1 (Samson 65, Kishan 35)

14:13 , George Flood

A change of ends from Curran as England desperately search for some sort of answer here.

A single by Samson is followed by another huge shot from Kishan, who has back-to-back sixes.

Brook has a word with Curran and Kishan then fires through the off side to Salt for a single as India hit the 100 mark.

Samson with a risky-looking shot now with a man on the boundary, but it sails over his head for another six.

England just cannot stop him as he then crashes away for four.

Curran coming around the wicket now, bowling a wide before Samson takes another clever single.

Overs 8: India 92-1 (Samson 53, Kishan 28)

14:07 , George Flood

Dawson starts with a wide before Jacks almost fumbles a simple piece of fielding to give up a boundary, but just about recovers.

Samson and Kishan twice go for two and get home before another quick single from Kishan.

A really poor delivery from Dawson is sent into orbit by Samson, who with that massive six reaches his half-century in just 26 deliveries.

He smartly flicks away for another single, Kishan back on strike and nailing a slog sweep that flies away for six.

A woeful start from Dawson and this partnership is up to 72 from 38 for India.

Overs 7: India 73-1 (Samson 46, Kishan 17)

14:03 , George Flood

But not like that as Rashid’s first ball of the innings is effortlessly struck for four by Samson.

India are into the 70s and Samson’s half-century is fast approaching.

A dot ball is followed by two quick singles, before Samson is finally forced onto the defensive and then gets his timing wrong to show some signs of vulnerability at last.

Spin at both ends for England now as Liam Dawson comes into the attack for the first time.

14:00 , George Flood

Adil Rashid is now into the England attack.

England need to stem the flow of runs here, and fast.

Overs 6: India 67-1 (Samson 41, Kishan 16)

13:58 , George Flood

Sam Curran comes into the England attack to finish the powerplay and flashes down a dangerous initial delivery before being smashed for successive fours by the soaring Samson.

Samson then nudges a single and the next delivery is too high to Kishan from Curran, who gives up a cheap extra.

The scoreboard keeps ticking over very nicely for India, who end the powerplay at 67-1 ahead of a drinks break.

(Getty Images)

Overs 5: India 55-1 (Samson 31, Kishan 15)

13:51 , George Flood

Overton is knocked for a couple of quick-fire singles before Kishan produces two superb shots for back-to-back fours, a nonchalant flick off leg stump followed by a lovely cover drive.

A dot ball at the fourth attempt for Overton, who England the over with a fierce bouncer that is wisely ducked.

Overs 4: India 45-1 (Samson 30, Kishan 6)

13:47 , George Flood

Kishan nicks a quick single off Jacks to open his account before Samson wallops another confident shot away for four.

Another quick single follows before Kishan helps himself to his first boundary as he drops to one knee and cleverly drills through the leg side.

Jamie Overton is coming into the England attack for Archer.

Overs 3: India 34-1 (Samson 25, Kishan 0)

13:43 , George Flood

Another short ball from Archer is pulled away for four by Samson, who then lofts a straight shot to Brook - who drops the easiest of catches. Oh dear.

Samson rubs it in by smoking an enormous six into the Sachin Tendulkar Stand. What a shot.

He then flicks away for four to end another expensive Archer over that goes for 14.

He won’t thank his skipper one bit for that shocking drop.

WICKET! Abhishek Sharma (9) c Salt, b Jacks - India 20-1

13:39 , George Flood

Jacks watches Abhishek clatter his first ball through the off side for a maiden boundary.

Jacks responds with three straight dot balls, a run broken by Abhishek drilling down the ground for four.

He then goes for a huge shot but picks out Salt for an easy catch.

India lose their first wicket amid silence at the Wankhede Stadium!

Kishan Ishan to the crease.

Overs 1: India 12-0 (Samson 11, Abhishek 1)

13:35 , George Flood

Some lovely shape early from Archer as he asks immediate questions of Samson, the hero of India’s pivotal win over the West Indies on Sunday.

Samson swings uncertainly at one that nips back, but then dispatches a bouncer over the top of mid-on for four to settle any nerves.

He follows it with a confident six as he blasts away a very short ball from Archer.

He notches a quick single, with Abhishek then timing a good shot to get off the mark to end an expensive opening over for England.

Will Jacks to bowl next.

13:30 , George Flood

Jofra Archer is bowling first to Samson on a pitch tinged with green.

This could favour a bit of pace early on...

Here we go

13:28 , George Flood

Players out and national anthems done, we’re about to get underway in Mumbai!

A great atmosphere at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson will open the batting for India.

Confirmed teams

13:25 , George Flood

Here are today’s teams in full, with Jamie Overton replacing Rehan Ahmed for England and India unchanged.

India: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah

England: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (WK), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (C), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid

India unchanged from West Indies win

13:10 , George Flood

Suryakumar Yadav insists he was looking to bat first anyway.

India are unchanged from their crucial Sanju Samson-inspired five-wicket win over the West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday that sealed their last-gasp progress from the Super 8 stage.

So no return for Kuldeep Yadav after all.

Varun Chakravarthy remains their frontline spinner in an attack that also includes Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel.

England win toss and choose to bowl

13:04 , George Flood

Brook wins the toss for England and elects to bowl first.

As expected, Jamie Overton comes in for Rehan Ahmed.

Here comes the toss

13:03 , George Flood

Captains Suryakumar Yadav and Harry Brook are out in the middle and we’re about to have the toss...

India back 'match-winner' Chakravarthy

13:00 , George Flood

Amid questions over Kuldeep Yadav potentially replacing Varun Chakravarthy for India today, bowling coach Morne Morkel called the mystery spinner a “match-winner”.

"With Varun at times, to his credit, he wants to be a big performer for the team, so he'll put a little bit of pressure on himself," Morkel said.

"But he's a match-winner for us."

India’s fielding has also come under scrutiny during this World Cup so far and it has been a clear point of emphasis ahead of facing England.

"At times we're guilty of giving away maybe 15-20 runs in the field,” Morkel said.

“Nobody looks to drop a catch on purpose. It's not like we don't train it.

"That's one one aspect that we keep working hard on and asking the guys to really step up on."

India and England set for latest semi-final chapter

12:45 , George Flood

What happened on the previous two consecutive semi-final meetings between these sides at the T20 World Cup?

In 2022, England thrashed India by 10 wickets in stunning fashion at the Adelaide Oval as then-captain Jos Buttler hit 80 and opening partner Alex Hales struck 86 as they successfully chased down a target of 169 without losing a single wicket.

India got emphatic revenge against the defending champions in Guyana two years later, winning by 68 runs after England were dismissed for 103 in just under 17 overs while chasing 172.

Kuldeep Yadav took 3-19 that day, including the crucial wicket of Harry Brook.

Overton expected to replace Ahmed for England

12:31 , George Flood

So, what personnel changes can we expect to the respective teams for today’s semi-final shootout?

For India, there has been much debate about whether Kuldeep Yadav should come into their bowling attack, either as a like-for-like replacement for the hit-and-miss Varun Chakravarthy or to add to their spin quota - likely at the expense of fast bowler Arshdeep Singh or potentially Shivam Dube.

England are expected to replace spinner Rehan Ahmed with right-arm quick Jamie Overton on a pitch at the Wankhede Stadium that could favour pace early on, but is traditionally friendly for batters.

Brook: England now confident playing against spin

Much has been made of the spin battle heading into today’s crunch clash, with Michael Vaughan among those to confidently claim that England currently have a superior attack in that department.

Indeed, Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson, Will Jacks - and Rehan Ahmed against New Zealand - have all impressed with the ball during their winning run, while Varun Chakravarthy was not at his best for India during the Super 8 stage.

England notably floundered against the West Indies’ spinners during the groups, but Brook feels like they have definitely turned a corner in that area.

"I feel like England always get a bad rap for playing against spin," Brook said.

"We accepted that before coming into this competition, we were going to face challenges on pitches that can assist spin.

"But we've gone to Sri Lanka and we've won six games in a row against a subcontinent side who are very good in their own backyard.

“We've got a lot of confidence playing on turning pitches."

England must banish Mumbai memories

Much may depend today on how England handle the conditions at the sold-out Wankhede Stadium, which only has a capacity of just over 33,000 but is renowned for its fervent atmosphere.

England have not fared well in Mumbai previously, only just scraping past Nepal by four runs in their opening game of the tournament thanks to Sam Curran’s crucial death-bowling and then being brushed aside by 30 runs by the West Indies on their return.

They will not need reminding that they were humiliated by 150 runs in a record defeat when they last played India at this stadium 13 months ago, with Abhishek Sharma hitting 135 off just 54 balls as the hosts set a ridiculous target of 248 and England were then all out for 97 in only 10.3 overs.

England lost that hopelessly one-sided T20 series 4-1, which will give India a lot of confidence heading into today’s semi-final showdown.

Brook: 'Awesome' England don't need to be perfect to win

11:54 , George Flood

There have certainly been no complete performances from England at this tournament so far, but it hasn’t mattered up to this point as they have battled hard to win six of their seven matches.

Captain Harry Brook believes his team’s sheer togetherness, fighting spirit and composure in high-pressure situations makes them an “awesome” force to be reckoned with.

"I don't believe we need a perfect game to win the competition," Brook said yesterday.

"I feel like it's round the corner but the games we have won have been nowhere near perfect and we've managed to get the wins.

"The unity and the belief in each other and the belief that we can win games when we do get into those pressure situations, and the calmness that we've had, has been outstanding.

“This team is awesome. Everybody wants to win.

“But even when we're playing golf, playing cards, whatever, everybody is always really competitive and they always have that slight edge and they take it out into the cricket."

He added: "It's a dream come true for most of us to play in a World Cup semi-final against the home nation at a very iconic ground.

"We wouldn't say we are underdogs. It would be stupid of us to not be confident.

“They are probably the favourites but we're going to go out there and give it a hell of a crack."

Morkel warns India over 'dangerous' and 'fearless' England in 'shootout'

11:48 , George Flood

England certainly haven’t had things all their own way at this T20 World Cup so far, almost losing to minnows Nepal in Mumbai and then making harder work than they should have of victories over both Italy and Scotland, as well as being brushed aside by the West Indies amid ongoing questions over Jos Buttler’s form in particular.

But they have undeniably shown impressive resilience and grit to persevere and win all three tough, hard-fought games in the Super 8s, against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand - making it 16 wins from their last 18 T20 matches completed.

"They're a team that's street-smart, there's a lot of quality in their side," India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel said on Wednesday.

“Batting quite long and deep makes them really dangerous. They've got wicket-taking options with the ball.

"The way they approach a T20 game is fearless, trying to take the game on makes them a dangerous side.

"I feel like it's going to be a good shootout between two aggressive teams and whichever side can hold their nerve and read the conditions will come out on top."

Finn Allen heroics power New Zealand past South Africa

As mentioned, it is New Zealand awaiting the winners of today’s latest India vs England showdown in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

The Black Caps were clear underdogs against the soaring and previously unbeaten Proteas, but thrashed them with ease at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.

New Zealand limited South Africa to 169-8 after captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bowl first, with Marco Jansen hitting a 27-ball half-century after South Africa were in real trouble at 77-5.

They made a mockery of the resulting chase, reaching 84-0 during the powerplay and quickly winning by nine wickets with 43 balls to spare, easing to 173-1 after Finn Allen’s fastest century in T20 World Cup history off just 33 deliveries.

It was the joint third-fastest ton in the history of men’s T20 internationals.
