With Ben Stokes unable to bowl, England have picked only one seam bowler, Mark Wood. Left arm spinner Jack Leach, who returns to the side after missing the Ashes, is joined by 19-year-old leg spinner Rehan Ahmed and 24-year-old debutant slow left-armer Tom Hartley. Spinner Shoaib Bashir, who was only granted a visa on the eve of the first Test, will join England later this week.
India, meanwhile, are without Virat Kohli for the first two Tests due to personal reasons. Skipper Rohit Sharma has opted to replace the talismanic batter with 30-year-old Rajat Patidar, who is in a rich vein of form having scored 151 against England Lions in Ahmedabad last week.
